Last night I was hanging out with some friends (a couple they both lift and both are trainers) I was told that when a person turns 30 years old...every year afer that one pound of muscle will turn into one pound of fat...so a person will not gain weight but their body will look flabby/soft (I am assuming this is a person that does not work out/train).

if this is the case...then next year will be my second annual 29th birthday.

Ask them for a credible reference. Smile

If they are trainers who truly understand the way the human body works, then they should certainly be able to shed a realistic perspective on the subject of aging.
  • Muscle and fat are two entirely distinct tissues -- One cannot be "changed" into the other. If muscle is lost and/or fat is gained, it is through neglegence and inactivity. If you employ what I call the GOYA principle (that's Get Off Your Ass) and intelligently control how you nourish your body, then you can enjoy a fit body for your entire lifespan.
  • Many/most stories that you hear (like this one) are based on misrepresented general population statistics. Just because the rest of the world lacks smarts & umph doesn't mean that you have to suffer the same fate.
I'll be 55 this year. At 29 years old, I weighed 160-lbs. I now weigh 180-lbs ... but the added weight is not a function of fat gain.

this is why I asked...it did sound dumb...but I had to ask to make sure...

anytime I hear anything negative about turning 30...I panic...Smile

but thanks for the info that makes more sense.

Such a myth.

Here's Scott Hults who started training at age 61.

I don't think he's fat.  He also just debunked the myth that you can't build muscle later in life.

He also busted the myth that you can't train hard and heavy.

You can do whatever you want.  Don't let anybody else tell you otherwise.

My best years for muscle building and fat loss have been AFTER 30.  But that's just me. Smile
