fats to get calories in? - Monday, August 03, 2009 7:28 PM ( #1 )
I was looking at a post about PB at night and rather than jump in, I decided to create a new post. Im on a clean bulk now and I get to a point where I  have already taken in my daily amount of fats, but still have not hit the number of calories I need. Im trying to get 2300 cal right now with 25% fats, 25 to 30% protein, and the rest carb. On non work out days, I get to the end of the day and im shy about 200 to 300 cal. I have been eating granola cerial to get the cal. I do like granola though. Could eat lots more if I had it. I did not eat the PB because the fats would go over what I wanted them to be. Is this good thinking, or should I just let the fats head over into the 30 to 35% range? I had been trying to follow some info that Dan put out there in his how to bulk thread.

From some reading I have done, right now im looking to get 2300 cal. Im trying to get that with 43g fats, 191g protein and 287g carb. Trouble is, I easy get 43g fats before the day is out. I end up around 60g or more in fats without hitting the olive oil shots and multiple  PB dives. This comes from the breakfast PB and the chicken I eat during the day. I do have some olive oil in my diet, but I limit it to 1 tbls or less. My calories though end up being shy by 200 to 500. Thats when I hit the granola.

Any advice for low fat, high carb calories ?

Do you really think the difference in 25% and 30% fats is going to make a noticeable alteration in your physique?

Or would you rather not eat enough calories to grow?

Look at the big picture.

Coconut oil is my preferred choice of fat to ingest.  I take 3 tablespoons a day.  One at breakfast, one at lunch, and one at dinner.

I'm of the opinion that a low fat diet is bad for you.  I get as much fat as I possibly can.

I thought, at least a few years ago, the thinking was that coconut oil was bad for you, no?

Coconut oil is EXTREMELY good for you, as evidenced by the link above.  I would also recommend you read the Weston A. Price foundation's website: www.westonaprice.org.

You know all these research studies I hear about on the news really piss me off:  One minute coconut oil is bad for you, and now it's extremely good for you.  Wish they'd make up their minds!  :(

It also depends on how it's processed... Or should I say the lack there of... Most Cheep foods that use coconut oil would use either Hydrogenated Coconut oil... that is practically poison... But so long as it is not rendered via heat or highly processed... ehhheeemmm virgin coconut oil...delicious and nutritious.

^-- exactly.  It must be extra-virgin and cold-pressed.

Well, the difference between 25% and 30% I guess is not that much in the big picture. However, 25% fats was the very  top end in my thinking. In other words, if worse came to worse, I could see the level getting up 25% sometimes, but Id rather it be at 20%, and have more room to eat proteins and carbs.

I don't see any reason at all to limit good fats.  The only macronutrient that needs to be limited IMO is protein (at high amounts obviously), but there shouldn't be any cap on carbs or fats.

Re:fats to get calories in? - Monday, August 10, 2009 6:30 PM ( #17 )
Seems to be two schools of thought on that issue. Some say no need to limit good fats, others say to limit total fats, (good and bad) to 25% of your total calories. Some of those that say to limit the fats and increase carbs while on a bulk also say not to limit fats and to decrease carbs on a cut. So who is right? I myself like the idea of limiting fats on a bulk. Now im not quite sure how I will be affected by that but Im trying to find out. I may end up liking the other school better. Dont know yet though.

Eat the amount that makes you feel good and gives you the most energy.  It will be different for everyone.
