I did some research and to get to the weight I want 1560 cals a day. Is that a bit much? the treadmill only burns about 400? Is walking slower uphill better than walking faster on a flat surface?

Hi Marina,
Sorry for the delay.
What are your goals?  If you want to trim down you are better off trying a walk/jog program but of course to answer your question, uphill will exert more calories.
1650 seems a bit low but I do not know your height, weight, trainig or diet so its hard to say.

Hi

Thanks for getting back to me, basically I want to tone up and lose weight. I do some weights and have been walking on the treadmill.
I am 150cm, and 6 weeks ago weighed 61kg, I'm down to 56.5kg and want to get to 47 or 46kg. I've been doing about 1hr on the treadmill 5 days a week and have cut down the carbs. I've been eating more fish, chicken and vegetables and am trying to eat small every 3 hours.
Am I doing enough on the treadmill or should I be doing more?
Cheers

I would say to try the walk jog idea, walking alone will not get you enough fat burning, but an hour is great....
Your food mentioned is great too!
A day or 2 of circuit weight training will also help greatly.

Hi There,

I agree with Italianangel that some more weight training would help you immensely - I know you mentioned doing "some," but don't be afraid of heavier weights in order to add some muscle...what most people don't understand is that fat needs no calories to maintain itself, while muscle NEEDS calories to maintain itself, so in essence, the more muscle you have, the more you can eat and your muscles USE those calories just to maintain.  You might be surprised how quickly you can lose fat and add muscle (with the result being a leaner body) when you add in heavier weights.  There are some great websites that give details on beginning strenth training, but please, don't be afraid of bulking up at this level.  And in your case, I think it's great that you're doing cardio, and I also agree that you probably need to get your heart rate higher to burn more calories (than just walking).  Also, you didn't mention time of day for your cardio, but morning is best before breakfast, then eat a carb & protein breakfast immediately afterwards.  This will jumpstart your metabolism and help burn more calories all day.  Cutting the carbs is great, but don't forget as you are working out more that you want to consume "good" carbs...meaning complex carbs (ie, whole grains, etc).  The good carbs help your body to absorb protein and put it where you want it - into muscles!  And of course, any fat you do intake should be considered carefully - you want to avoid saturated fats, and try to consume more monounsaturated fats (some examples are safflower oil, avocados, flax seeds, salmon and almonds).  Eating often is really great, too! :-)  Hope that helps.
