drinking vs. weight lifting
-
Wednesday, February 21, 2007 5:23 PM
im always gettin hastled by my friends for weightlifting such as : "did ya have your protein shake today" or " does it hurt takin that shot of roids". anyways, at a party some kids said to me while drinking a beer " there go your gains for the day".... is it true that drinking alcohol affects weight lifting?

It lowers test levels, slows protein synthesis, and is burned for energy first by your body. So most of what you eat, usually not the healthiest , is more likely to be stored as fat.

in college so i drink. but i try to limit it only drinking once a weekend, sat night at the pub usually. And then i let myself have a wasted weekend once every 2-3 months where i get obliterated and of course eat mcdonalds. thats jsut my take on it.

I think it depends on your age. I am in my last year of college and while I have slowed down A LOT on drinking, I still drink about one night a week, and with Spring Break rapidly approaching, I know I am going to be plastered for an entire week. You just have to try your best to combat the dehydration by drinking a lot of water, resist the urge to eat "McDonalds" and don't let a fun weekend (or week) turn into a worthless month.

interesting story. i got a friend he boozes 3 times a week, yet he lost 5 pounds. me i don't drink at all, i just work out everday and i gained about 8. let me know if im wrong but im guessing im gaining muscle, and hes losing it. cause i feel strong as ever in the weight room. i think he maybe on something though, cause he is getting stronger, n that usually doesn't happen when your losing weight and drinking alot.

I have friends the who are the same way. It's person-specific, different people have different metabolisms and can deal with different amounts of alcohol. Alcohol is VERY calorie-dense so it is probably safe to assume that your friend is gaining fat, but not necessarily. I have friends who booze ALL the time yet they just have a natural BF % lower than mine. Genetics can suck!

To be honest, I drink once maybe twice a weekend, when I am bulking, and when I am cutting 0 - 1 times, it's gotta, I rarely make it a point to go out and get "wasted" but, when I am out I will have a few beers, most of the time it's Mich Ultra or Bud Light, but my point, the next day in the gym, I have really decent workouts. Maybe its the fact that I KNOW I have to lift harder because of what I did the night before. Maybe it's just me, but after eating clean ALL the time, I don't think it's TOO bad of a sin to have 4 - 5 beers. Just my 2
