Remember its mostly in the legs. Get the form down first before you start picking up heavy weights. Good Luck!

Youtube "Mark Rippetoe deadlift instruction". It's by far the most simple way to teach a novice how to deadlift correctly.

Start with light weight to get your form down, I seriously fxcked up my back from deadlifts, I couldn't workout for months.

hillbillyfred i thought deads worked ur whole body No, the whole body will benefit from it's hormonal release. But it will not work your whole kinetic chain like a squat, pullup, or press will. It will also not working muscles like the biceps (due the elbow being extended) nor the pectoralis major. Most muscles during a deadlift are only contracted isometrically or as stabilizers.

watch riptoes videos on youtube on deadlift. i reccomend to buy the SS book as well. very informative on the compound lifts. start light, and always always warm up before you begin your working sets. ....did not know the pullup worked the kinetic chain. thanks MVP ....and NO deadlift is not mostly legs. may start argument, but i know i can have some reputable posters back me up, but its mainly a back workout. It does work a lot of muslces/stabilizers though and thats where a lot of confusion comes in.

Well yes and no. Deadlift gets a notorious wrap for being a back workout, which it is...but it involves the entire posterior chain as the prime involvement. Lower back, hips, glutes, hammys. Im sure people put it on back day not just because it does work the back so well, but because doing heavy deadlifts and squats on the same day is very taxing. The back has to hold the bar in place, the muscles have to keep you from arching. But its the posterior chain that is actually moving the weight from the floor, up to your thigh. I just meant you lift from the legs not that its an only leg lift. It works alot of other muscles like what everyone else has been saying. Just look up a deadlift video to make sure your form is correct. That riptoe guy has alot of good videos.
