creatine for my 14.5 year old - Friday, January 02, 2004 6:32 PM
Hi I am new to this creatine . My son is 14.5 years old and has been taking it. It is from a company called "just be natural" it is called H-Cet it has 6 grams per scoop and he is taking 4 scoops daily for about a month now. My concern and question are, is he too young and is this too much for him. he his about 6' 1/2" and weights 230. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to DB dad!

There's a lot of info about creatine here.

BUT.. here's a pretty good comprehensive article on what it is, dosage and such..

All About Creatine

He's taking 6g per scoop, 4 scoops per day.. that is called the loading phase. Which typically lasts 5 days. Since he's doing it for a month.. he's taking 24g a day? That is around 6x more then I do and most others.

5-10g a day is standard. Much more and it's not utilized anyway and you may experience such side effects like stomach discomfort.

I would tell him to quit taking that much per day. 5-10g a day. Maybe some before.. or after.. or all before or after.. but do not continue the loading phase. It was only meant to get the body up to required levels not be on a constant loading phase. I'm sure the directions also state such.

There's also a very nice comprehensive list of creatine subjects from About.com

About.com's Guide to Creatine

Overall I'd say Creatine and teens is fine.. but in lower doses then adults. According to the math, he's taking more then 99% of any adults I've ever seen on any bodybuilding board. At tops, people might do 20g a day, but that is usually just a waste of money when 5-10g does the job just fine.

If you need a little more specific help, just holler and I'll do a little more in-depth research for you.

That dosage likely won't hurt him, but he is, literally, pissing your money away, as most of that is being pissed out.

well first of all like the guy before me said, ur son is pissing ur money away. Let me ask you some questions, How long has ur son been bodybuilding??? and What is his BodyFat%???? That is too much creatine i think for anyone and especially a teenager who is still growing, If you ask me right now all he needs is a good multi-vitamin and protein and maybe a litle L-glutamine a perfect diet and good training (because he is still very young don't train him hard and try to avoid a lot of leg training because of his growth).... make sure he drinks lots and lots of water if he drinks creatine,

I am 15 and had tried creatine when I had just turned 14. I did loading only for a week(which I now know is useless) and only 5 gram a day for some time after that. I feel like I am a "nonrespoder" and since then have moved on to better products. However I was perfectly healthy when taking it. Whether or not you know this but there are small amounts of creatine in red meat and fish. This is why I conclude that creatine is harmless just pretend he is eating lots of sushi( I believe there is one gram in a large serving of meat but heat denatures it). Id tell him to go for it, but he does not need so much your just using more of the product so you have to buy more sooner

Well I wouldn't let my son take it. I was taking it and it caused my blood pressure to go sky high it was well over 200/100 may have been 220/110 not sure exactly because it was 6 years ago. My friend also had high pressure from it felt like his head was going to explode. Now I only take a multi-vitamin have been for 20 some years now at the age of 42. I've worked out for over 25yrs did the heavy lifting years tried all the supplements but unless you plan on making a living as a bodybuilder or power lifter save your money a few supplements are Ok like your protien powders but your body don't need the chemicals. I also say get a good vitamin. A good natural vitamin

um...creatine alone shouldn't cause high blood pressure. I have been taking it for almost 6 months and no affect to my blood pressure. Of course, I am on high blood pressure meds, have been for almost 2 years. I've read a lot about creatine, and that was never mentioned. I've seen a few cases were it was od'd and caused problems with the kidney...but that's it.

I was taking Yohimbe with it so that could have helped elevate my blood pressure too. I just got nervous when I started having pains in my arm and chest so now I gave up all supplements except for vitamins and I am on pills for high cholestrol(actually high triglycerides) for the last several months. My pressure is fine now though. Like I said that was about 6 years ago.
