1.Creatine works by changing water potentials in the muscles so amino acids flood into the muscles, so yes, the muscles are increasing mainly in water weight, but you do get extra amino acids (as long as youre eating enough lol) into your muscles faster because of this.
2.Creatine is also a part of the citric acid cycle and can bind to phosphates (or sold as creatine phosphate) to replenish ATP when you use it up during a workout, though this is very quick and doesnt get useful for the entire workout
3.Yes your muscles will shrink in water weight when you stop the cycle, however they should end up bigger than when you started your cycle as the extra growth should be added onto it.
The best benefits of taking creatine are these main ones, i took creatine for an entire year, didnt even cycle, just took the stuff, and i gained a lot of mass, but you need food etc as well.
Another good thing is you have more endurance, and can fullfill more in full body routines, whereas nowadays im off creatine and the deadlifts really kill me, on creatine this doesnt really happen much, you can tell the difference in energy with creatine.
You may lose strength after youve stopped taking it but thats not a definite.
