Well rippedchick linked me something that talked about creatine being absorbed better with like 46g carbs 46g protein, than being consumed with 96g carbs.  I am drinking a protein shake right now with creatine and beta alanine mixed in it.  But usually on workout days I mix my stuff with grape juice, and then have my protein shake pretty soon after.  If you are trying to keep carbs low I would think mixing creatine with protein would be fine, but I honestly can't give you a good answer on whether or not it would be absorbed that well.  Personally I don't worry that much about it, I can sure feel the beta alanine get absorbed when it is in just protein.

I prefer my creatine when uptake is at its highest - first thing in the morning (half serving), and immediately post-workout (half serving)... both on an empty stomach.

I also take BCAAs with the post-workout one.

Def I always take my creatine by itself and jug it down fast!
