crazy gym rat's and the advice they give...

I was doing "sholders/abs" today, and had a guy in his late 30's or early 40's interupt me to tell me I should be using free weights and not the machine for military press.

I explained that I am pretty new to lifting and since there isn't any sort of propper military press free weight bench at the gym, I didn't want to risk dropping the bar (i don't generally have a spotter)
what are opinions on that - how do you get a military press excersize with free weights - where do you "hang up the bar" between sets?

Anyway - back to the crazy guy - I had seen this guy at the gym several times - lifting like crazy, going to all sorts of things from chest to abs to back, sholders, then back to chest, etc...
- seemed like he hit all muscle groups in one workout as hard as he could and he never took more the 20 seconds rest between sets.
(never saw him do legs though

Anyway - since he started the conversation I asked about his routine, and he told me hit hits all upper body 5 times a week, the same workout, and doesn't bother with legs.
I didn't say anything and just nodded.
says hes been doing it for years, and he sure doesn't have much size on him - maybe some strength, but no size...

I fully admit I am a noob, and maybe this guy has a point about the military press being better with free weights - but I can't take him seriously - I feel like I already know alot more then this guy about basic concepts of body building - thank god for the internet - maybe I'll tell him about it next time I see him... although he doesn't seem like the kinda guy that can use a computer

EDIT: the guy has the BEST mullet I have ever seen (bald spot on top middle of his head included - he is a real classic) he also checks out girls doing cardio very obviously and makes crude comments to any guy nearby that will listen.

I see trainers in my gym. Doing odd stuff. I look at it like this.. if you are 130 lbs.. telling me how to get huge.. I'm not inclined to believe you.

If this guy is running around.. 5x upper body, no legs, same workout.. and after 2 years looks exactly the same.. then I think his actions and physical appearance speak louder then his words of wisdom.

However, I do think free weights are better then a machine. But in your case, no spotter and such.. it will be difficult. And with a machine, there's a much lower chance of having bad form because well.. you can't really. With free weights, your body uses a lot of core stabilizer muscles to keep things in line and the range of motion is great.

Okay, back to your question.

Do military style presses with dumbbells. You can start off light.. go heavier over time. If the weight is too much, it's a dumbbell.. drop it. There's no big bars and there's nothing coming crashing down on your head. So dumbbells are your best alternative for shoulder military presses.

Then you could try a Smith machine military press. That is pretty nice as well. If you have one at your gym. Easily locks into place when you are finished.

And finally, some gyms have specific stations for free weight shoulder presses. But I would recommend a spotter in that situation as you will have to press the weight up to get it back into the holders. Although I did see a guy at our gym start it off on the side rails... kinda a safety catch.. and then press it straight up from there. So he was able to use that station pretty well.

He does have a point about the military press being better with a free weight. But you do what you have to do. That is, learn slowly and progress. If you are getting results from the machine, stick with it.. until you feel that you could make some progress with the dumbbells in a pressing style. Then if you get a partner or a quick spot, move onto the shoulder press station or smith machine if you have one.

The guy has a point about that.. but better or not.. you should start off slow and at your own pace. Progress to free weights when you feel comfortable trying such. He has no point when it comes to working his upper body 5x a week and never hitting his lower body.

There's a lot of armchair experts in the gym when it comes to giving advice.

My story is..

I got 50% you are fugging nuts for not wearing a belt when squatting and another 50% you are an idiot for wearing one. Moron if you do, moron if you don't. Sheesh..

I'd replace them.. no need to do military presses on the machine and then do them with dumbbells.

You'd be doing the same exercise twice.

Then if you don't like it.. go back to the machine.

But military style presses are awesome for shoulders.

And if you don't like the dumbbells, try the Smith machine if you have one. But I think you will find the dumbbells acceptable and easy to work with and much safer.

Good workout for your shoulders...

It'd be real cool if you could get a pic of that mullet- Maybe we could start a "critique that ancient hair" thread in out of bounds...
But I agree with MDA on the shoulder stuff. Free weight military presses are the best shoulder exercise there is- But safety comes first, and you do have other options. You shoulders won't get too big at all if you drop a bar on your head.
