I have been working out on and off for a couple years now, and I have decided that I really want to buckle down and settle in to a routine and stick to it for a while. One question I have is that your beginner routine is only four days a week. Personally, I would be totally willing to put 5 days a week in, if it would bring more gains. Do you recommend I modify it for five days a week, and if so, do you have any suggestions on what muscle groups to move to Wedesday? Basically, what are the pros and cons of 4 days a week versus 5, and what do you recommend for someone like myself.

Secondly, you state that one of the most important parts of bodybuilding is consitency. However, I have heard that you have to change your routine, at least just a couple excercises around, every month or so to keep seeing gains. Is this true?

It may be helpful to point out that I don't think I am anywhere near hitting a "plateu" at this point.

I was also wondering why you don't include deadlifts into the routine. I am a pretty skinny guy looking to build some mass, would this be a good excercise for me to add in?

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi,

The four day routine allows for a mid week break to let the muscles you have trained recover a bit before the next two day onslaught. Remember that if you have not been consistently going to gym for a while the first month or so takes some getting use to for your body. I say the mid week day off is a good thing for now. If you wanted to you could shift a muscle group into the off day, it all depends on you. My opinion would be become consistent on the beginners routine for 8 weeks or so that will get you use to the day off and a consistent routine, then change it to a 5 day program this will "shock" your body as you are doing something different. It also does not allow you to become to use to doing the same thing. Change does promote growth your body gets use to doing the same things the more you mix it up the better gains you will see, changing routines every 6-8 weeks is the general consensus. As for dead lifts, it is very good exercise but if done wrong could do more harm than good, this is the case with most exercises but Dead lifts and squats are the two exercises that if done wrong or with poor technique could do real damage, especially to the lower back. I am sure someone could supply links to show you good form, or ask an instructor at you local gym.

Andromedus,

Be careful not to get into the mindset that more training will necessarily give you greater gains. You can overtrain and end up with no gains. Unless you are on the juice, four one-hour workouts a week will likely be the most you want to consider. Outside of steroid circles, I doubt you will find many advocating more than that. Personally, when trying to gain mass, I stick with 3 workouts a week. Not because I am too lazy to do a fourth or fifth but because I get better results.
