could i get some help please, i have no one else to answer =( - Thursday, July 17, 2008 4:29 PM ( #1 )
Well to start off i wouldnt actually consider myself a bigginner.
so yes i am 14 & it has been just now that i'v really started lifting hard and heavy,
i'm 5'6 but i live in a short family(moms 5'2,Dads 5'6).
to get to the point would it be safe for me to start power lifting and
start taking supplements such as creatine or whey protien isolate?
and is it safe to start lifting hard now because im thinking that
i still have a pretty good chance to keep on growing. would lifting effect my height
in a positive way or negative way.

it will most likely have no effect on your height. creatine probably isnt necessary but if you wanna take it go ahead, just stay hydrated. i used to think i always needed protein powders but i found that REAL food beats everything else. post workout eat tons of chicken, tuna, potatoes...anything healthy eat it. for every pound of lean bodyweight you'll need 1 gram of protein per day. one more thing, "eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a queen and dinner like a peasant"....back to your height growth question, drink good amounts of milk and eat foods with phosphorous(did i spell that right?) and that will help maximize your potential growth.

even though you might have a short family, theres no way to tell what age you will stop growing... for everyone no matter what its when your around 18. i would say its healthy to start lifting at 16 so you dont damage your bones.

but you know yourself.

hope this helped.

I think the whole "lifting will stunt your growth" myth has been debunked. However, you should still be careful if you're gonna go heavy lifting like squats, cause those could mess up your back or shoulder blades (I forget the exact term that is used).

I think you will be fine to start lifting. Like phersan said the stunting your growth thing is a myth. I started when I was about 14 1/2 years old and I was 5'9 and now I am 18 and 6'0. I am not part of a very tall family either with my dad and my brother at 5'10. Just be careful and I think you will be fine.

Just learn good form on the major lifts (deadlifts, squats, bench press, barbell rows. ect) and you'll be fine

Lifting won't stunt your growth but on the big lifts if you do not have correct form you may damage your joints wich will be a pain in the ass for the years to come

Its fine to start lifting, but as mentioned above start slowly so you don't go hard right away. Take it easy and add weight when you're comfortable. You don't really need supplements right now, just eat a lot to get big and you're still growing so you need to consume a lot of food. Stick with correct form and exercise execution and you'll be fine.
Its not what you know, its what you can do that counts!

Because its natural.

LOL....and whey and caein are....chemicals?UNNATURAL????

HaHaHa....At times protein powder is MORE beneficial than "REAL" food as whey powder is predigested and doesn't tax your system the same way having to digest "real" food....such as post workout when its not always convenient or advisable to eat a big meal. Powders do have there place.

No doubt, poweders are way more convinient, but that doesn't mean everyone has to drink them. I just keep noticing how people ask which protein shakes to buy and such without concentrating more on the workout. If one pushes himself to the limits and has proper diet then powders are not necessary unless you can't make the scheduled meals or always on the go.

In between meals they are necessary IMO. I'm not wanting to add the carbs associated with a meal to get my protein, If I am to stay somewhat cut. At 275lbs how much "food" would I have to intake (with Calories) to get the protein for my body size? Protein Supplement is in my case a must! You must feed the animal you are working out to make.

I'm not downing protein rich foods...just saying, for me personally,I can't always eat a big meal. Being an ecto , I find it very hard to get my calories and protein in just eating regular meals. I literally stuff myself every day...but without my shakes...I'd lose muscle mass. It is a constant struggle for some of us.

You'll always get guys who are more concerned with supps, than actually perfecting their lifting form,or putting much thoughT into a routine. But powders are a must for some of us....But should not be used as meal replacements. There is literally no way I could eat a meal, post workout to get my protein requirements.......
