i've got a friend that started the routine i'm on and on my second upper body day for the week dips are involved. its funny because everytime he looks at the dip bar he shivvers LOL. he tried them though, but gets bad pain in his colar bone area. i havn't ever had this problem so i really can't tell him what he can do to strengthen that area. after he did one set i just told him to stop and just wait for me to get done with my sets. does anyone know of anything that can help strengthen that area? thanks

Where does it hurt on the collar bone? Towards the shoulder, or towards the chest? I know I have the same problem when I do anything on an incline, but I dislocated my collarbone before, so I know that is where it comes from. Dips do hurt a little, but have gotten better over the years. One thing I did to strengthen it was to work on my rotator cuff. Basically, lie down on your side, hold a 10 to 15 pound dumbbell in the top arm ( arm bent at a 90 degree angle) and pull the weight towards the ceiling....here is a pic of what I mean:

Same basic movement, but I think lying down works the rotator cuff a little better because there is more resistance at that angle. Make sure not to go too heavy....10 lbs will kick your ass on these for 12 reps. You look funny struggling after 3 or 4 sets with 10 lbs, but it works.
