clean fats, clean carbs - Sunday, February 15, 2009 6:05 PM ( #1 )
It seems to me there is a big difference between the two.  If you are say, on a clean bulk, you should not be eating foods with refined sugar in them or things like white bread which cause insulin spikes and increased fat storage.  However unhealthy fats like in meat do not cause an increase in insulin.  Speaking specifically about keeping fat off and not about the other health disadvantages of eating less healthy fats, it doesnt seem like they are much worse than healthy fats.  Am I correct?

If I am then it could be said that in a clean bulk, youre really just trying to stay away from bad carbs, as long as you dont mind eating less than optimal fats.

Saturated fats also help to keep your testosterone levels up.

When comparing nothing health related they are essentially the same, 9g/kcal. Disregarding the health aspect is kind of pointless though when you are talking about dieting. If you drink milk you get plenty of saturated fats.

IMO, I stay away from carbs all together(occasionaly morning, and always PWO nutrition). My body works a lot better off EFA's, and lean protein sources. However, I always eat simple carbs after a workout-beagle and jelly, and PWO shake.

beagle and jelly??  We tend to eat dogs with sweet and sour sauce here, but to each their own I guess.

Good fats should outnumber your bad fats.  Stay away from packaged foods for a clean bulk.

Nothing wrong with saturated fats, especially from organic, free-range meat.  As long as the source of saturated fat is decent, it is fine.  High quality meat also has more omega 3s.

^ right, as long as you are getting saturated fats from good sources. Milk, eggs, quality meat and you stay within limits you are fine.

It's basically the ****ty hydrogenated oils, refined, gmo, vegetable oils that are the problem.

And what they said.

I agree.

And trans-fats and hydrogenated vegetable oils and stuff.  I always stay away from those.

You don't eat vegetables, whole grains, fruits and other healthy carbs? Interesting. Good luck with that.....

I would have no energy to lift hard if I did not eat lots of carbs

Energy in general is not the problem on a keto diet, but intensity does suffer.  Youll feel great and have energy all day but you simply cant put up the same weight as you could using carbs for energy.

People react differently to carbs depending on their metabolic type.  Some will be completely drained of energy without sufficient carbs while others can operate fine off low carb diets.  Typically the people that respond well to low carb diets are the ones that feel ****ty after having too much sugar.  We all have a predetermined body type, and you should eat the foods that make you feel good, not the foods that you are told to eat because it worked for someone else.

Interesting eating sugar makes me feel pretty lousy.

I am bulking right now and pretty much my main concern is avoiding sugar, except some post workout.  As far as fats like people said I eat plenty of fat good and some bad but i stay away from hydrogenated and trans fats to a lesser extent.

I will clean my diet up more when I cut up including timing of carbs etc.  I'm not removing them completely unless i decide to get down to like 6-7% bf, in which I would still have a little carbs.

I too feel more strength and power when in a keto state.  I like to workout on an empty stomach....very empty.  Workouts should be an hour or less, so the 400 or so grams of sugar in my liver is plenty to get my brain through the workout.  In case anybody did not know, carbs are only needed to feed the brain.  BUT, the body can create this sugar if it needs to, that said, the muscles will have less size if the appropriate amount of carbs are not ingested to support glycogen stores.

i used to work off the same theory. working out in empty stomach early mornings.
but i would lose my mind after the 60th minute. And without a Mind to Push the body, there is no point just trying to heave weights. SO, im now having 4 scoops of oats with a glass of milk preworkout and it seems to workout GREAT! i can heave and push for 60 mins on full steam.
