chest pain - Sunday, August 21, 2005 9:01 AM
I was wondering if anybody new what could be wrong.I was doing bench presses, when I felt a sharp pain across my right pec. I stoped benching for  a while, every thing seemed to be going well for me, then by the third week when I was doing bench presses, I got that same sharp pain in my chest. I was'nt doing any heavy lifting, what could be wrong? anything to prevent this from happening again?

Hard to say, could be a number of factors but try to go lighter, condition the stablilizers like rotators and serratus.  You may need to look at your diet, certain minerals may be needed..........

Best thing is to see the Dr. if its still happening.

Sharp pain = bad.

The fact that you seemed ok after a little rest suggests its nothing major.

The fact that you hurt it again while doing light weights should tell you that it hasnt healed & you should stop and go see your doctor.

In the case that it is a small tear, nothing can be done but rest and rehab.

Larger tears need surgical intervention but this may not always be possible.

I dont think its lack of minerals as Linda suggested.

And as for conditioning the stabilisers - i wouldnt do any weights for a little while. Strengthening the shoulders, doing bicep curls etc all puts at least a little bit of stress on the pec muscle which is not what you want if youve injured it.

Like i always preach... rest and patience are the most neglected things when it comes to injury recovery. People worry that if the lay off the weights, theyll lose muscle and undo all their gains. Thats not true. Keep your diet good and your losses will be minimal to none.

Chances are, its probably a minor tear in which case, treatment = pain killers/anti-inflamms + NO WEIGHTS for a period of time.

See your doctor.

I've always been in pain constantly, i'm immobile right now... i've never thought about it like that. "rest and rehab" "see a doctor".... i must be messed up, still going though. the only muscles i care not to pull are the breathing muscles, like the 3 times i pulled my sternum, my god that sucked, other then that, i love pain.

i wouldn't see a doctor unless its severe, as in bothering you hours on end, otherwise he'll just tell you to do something that you should already know like rest and put heat on it, or at the most give you some methocarbonal and a 80 dollor bill.

ORIGINAL: Dae_Light

i get a similar thing when benching, dont know wot it is. its a sharp pain, but wen i come off, i cant lift my arms past horizontal, my chest tightens up, my trapz tighten, and its hard to breath, and its in my right pec predominately and going threw the the center of my chest. because i cant do overhead extension with the DB for my tri's afterwards,
i dont get it with any other chest exercises, apart from cable cross overs??
just seems a little wierd, its fine after about 3 days

Make sure you're breathing through your stomache and not your chest.

i also have a sharp pain in my chest.  the only diffrence is mine is in my left peck.  when i go to bench press i get the sharp pain as if im being stabbed in the chest.  i got it from playing football and i landed on the ball hard.  its been 23 days and it still hurts.  do you think i pulled a muscle? and how can i help it in the healing process?

Wow if they were cracked that would suck. I hate it when you get on a role and an injury sets u back to what u did at the beginning.
