chest big, arms not - bugging me, what to do? - Saturday, July 12, 2008 10:41 AM
Hi all

Straight to the point: I have a rather strange build. I'm 13 stone, my chest is very defined, such that I have to usually get XL tops which then go down too far below my waste - but any smaller and it pulls tight across my chest.

Yet my arms, in comparison, aren't developed. My forearms are probably a shade under the size you'd expect for my chest, but my forearms are noteably under.

Can anyone point my in the right direction to doing something about this?

I used to train, and formulated a program with strong emphasis on the arms, with the help of people on forums. But I was told to stop by a doctor (false alarm - I can now restart). I never really saw any arm progress though.

A few facts:
1) I'm vegetarian but eat well and plenty
2) My mum's a very, very slight build - maybe I'm stuck with it?

Thanks in advance for any help

Yeah sorry - thing is I had to stop, due to doctors' advice, so I don't recall offhand my routine. It was 3 times a week over probably a 6 month period, a fairly general routine working all the major groups, though upper arm routines were prevalent.

I know it's hard to build writsts etc because there's very little muscle tissue. When I did train I did wrist curls (both kinds) etc but no joy. They would bulk out immediately after the exercise but never permanently.

I see in your signature you use whey - I live out in Russia and it's hard to get, but I'm temporarily back in the UK where it's available. It helps put mass on, right?

was ur three day routine a full body workout?

because if it was then there should not have been alot of arm isolation excersizes in it. a full body routine should be about building mass through compund movements like the squat, bench press, overhead press and deadlift.

if u want bigger arms then maybe u should try an HST type workout. it will most likely be a 3 day whole body workout that concentrates on compund movements and is designed for size gain. u can find alot of hst routines on this site.

and as far as protein goes it can help gain mass but that is not its only use. ur muscles need protein to grow and recover and whey protein is an easy way to supply ur muscles with extra protein since it is fast releasing. but no protein is going to make u huge. it just helps out the recovery/building process.

if u want to build mass then u need a solid routine and a bulking diet consisting of whole foods like milk and whole eggs

No I'm under no illusion about protein making me huge etc, I was just enquiring after its usage.

Actually I'm happy with my general build and size - when I started upping my diet and being serious about training, I went from 11.2 stone to about 13 so I've reached where I want to be in terms of general size, it's just the arms thing that gets me.

I'll look into HST - starting point will be to find out what it means :)

Yes it was a full-body work-out, by the way.

Thanks

focus more on your arms, train em more times per week...

i wanted my chest to grow so bad, so i trained them 3 times a week, high volume, high intensity....strived to over reach...

So three times a week only doing exercises relating to the area in question?

That would seem logical, but I keep hearing about squats and all sorts of things, with people saying that you have to work the whole body and it will grow in sync. My chest and, actually, pretty much everywhere else, is where I want it to be already, so I've never quite understood this theory.

Anyway, seems it worked with you for the chest.

p..s. mistake in my original post: I repeated 'forearms', meant 'upperarms' when saying they were a shade under.

I think he means you keep training everything you simply add work for the lacking bodypart. At least I hope that's what he meant.
