burning muscle. - Tuesday, April 20, 2004 11:24 AM ( #1 )
I read the Body for Life book and have just a question about their recommendations for cardio. They say in the book to do cardio on you off days of lifting..say , for only 20 minutes. but they say to do interval cardio training at a high intensity. . I, but am unsure if 3 days at 20 min. is enough. I like the idea, but don't want to start gaining fat because of a lack of cardio. any advice? I dont wanna burn muscle...Im still growiing muscle mass
..
and also...can u tell me what interval cardio training at a high intensity is.
is that trying to say run fast , or jog slowly or what...for 20 minutes.
and also, I dont run on treadmills I run outside.

The best thing you can do is get a decent heart-rate monitor, that'll tell you how "intense" your cardio sessions are. You probably don't want to go much more than 85% of 220 minus your age.

If you're trying to bulk up, it's probably best if you just accept that you're going to put on fat as well as muscle. However, I personally don't think that 20 mins of cardio EVERY DAY is going to "burn muscle". Losing muscle is best prevented by lifting good and heavy, and getting enough to eat.

I think cardio and carbs are both getting bad raps right now, but it'll pass.

Straight up, you burn fat, and grow muscle. you cant burn muscle, you can lose it, but not burn it.

I think keeper means that you burn fat, carbs, and protiens. If you dont have the building blocks for muscle, you lose it.

You lose muscle when you stop lifting, if there isnt any muscle being torn, it wont have a reason to repair itself, hence it gets smaller and you lose it. If cardio burned fat I dont think any of the Pro's would be adding it into their routien.
