been working out 7 months and need some help please - Tuesday, July 28, 2009 7:47 AM ( #1 )
Hi everyone.

I am 33 years old and weigh 195.  I have been working out for about 7 months.  The first 5 months I didn't really have much of a routine and just kind of winged it.  Obviously I didn't see much results.  For the past 2 months, I have been using Muscle and Fitness Rock Hard Challenge workout.  I'm not following it to a tee but I'm close.  I'm using the basic principals of it.  I think I'm wokring out pretty hard and I go to the gym 3 days a week.  I post my routine at the end of this.

I'm not seeing alot of gains.  My strength seems to be improving but my body isn't.  I'm far from ripped.  I can flex my chest and see growth and my shoulder seem to be bigger.  Not seeing alot of bicep growth but bicep strength is improving.

Here's the killer.  My diet isn't that of a bodybuilders.  I'm not the healthiest eater. I try hard but I just don't eat healthy.  I don't eat breakfast regulalry and I do stop at McDonalds now and then.  I drink some beers now and then.  I'm not fat at all but have kind of a Chuck Liddell gut.  No abs to speak of.

I was taking whey and creatine but stopped 3 months ago.  The creatine wasn't doing anything.

Now I know my diet sucks but please respond with more than "change your diet" because that's tough for me to do.  Please help me out because it's frustrating to spend 35 bucks a month and not see changes.

Here's my rotuine:  The routine has me doing 3 sets of 6 at a heavyweight, then dropping the weight and doing a set of 10, then dropping it again and doing a set of 12

Monday/Chest and Tri's
Flat Bench
Incline Bench
Decline Bench
Decline Flies (or cable flies, or pec deck)
Close Grip BP
Overhead Tricep Extensions
Pull Downs

Wednesday/Legs
Squat
Leg Press
Leg Curl
Leg Extensions

Thursday/Shoulders
DB Press or Military Press
Upright Rows
Lat Raises

Fri/Back and Bi's
Seated Cable Rows
Lat Pull Dows
Bent Over Rows
Shrugs
Preacher Curl
Standing Curl with EZ Bar
Individual DB Curls

My first advice is to cut out the McD thing:  Folks around here will crush you like a bug.  I have the scars to prove it!  ;)   Probably is the diet, imo, that's the issue.  Have you had trouble gaining weight all your life?

Well, not everyone likes McDonalds, but if you are short on calories, I don't see it as a bad thing while bulking. That's just me. I haven't been there in a few months, but still.

Next, diet is I think 90% of this game, so you need to get your diet in check. Also, you need to cut some of the garbage out of your routine.

On chest/tri day you need
Flat Bench
Incline Dumbell
Weighted Dips
Close Grip Bench

Legs you need
Squats
Good Mornings
Lunges
Straight Leg Deadlift

Shoulders you need
Standing Overhead Press
Rear Delt Fly
Cleans
Front Raises

Back/Bis you need
Deadlift
Dumbell or Barbell Row
Weighted Pull Ups
Barbell Curl

Thanks so far.  In response to both replies....yes, I have had trouble gaining weight.  I was VERY skinny up to about age 30.  I weighed about 150.

And why are some of the routines garbage?  Not challenging you, just wondering why something like cable flies are garbage.  Do they not work?

Well, not garbage exactly, it's just that isolations don't hold fire to big compounds.

That, and you don't need that many exercises for your chest, biceps and triceps.

Do the routine I posted, and keep it simple. Lift heavy and eat every 2 hours.

so, I'm guessing that's you in the pic.  Did you accomplish that by following that routine and eating healthy?

What about cardio?

Its mostly diet. Working out is stimulation to your muscles, eating is the recovery. You eat enough they get bigger.

I suggest you read Burn The Fat Feed The Muscle.

Last BB book you'll ever need.

Yes, that's me.

I accomplished that by two years of hard work and going from a 143 pound skinny fat guy to a 190 pound 13% body fat guy.

did you accomplish that by following the routine you sent me or are you changing it/adding to it?

Do you allow junk food and beer?  I know that may seem like a silly question but I guess I need to know if I am stopping junk food and eliminating alcohol.

How often do you do cardio?

Thanks

I did several different programs and cutted and bulked in that time frame.

I did a lot of cardio on my cuts.

No junk food, no beer. The bench press, row, squat, deadlift and overhead press should be a way of life though, not a program.

But don't get me wrong. If my buddies or the baby momma wants to go out, I will eat some major food, no matter where we go.

And if there is a party and I wanna get smashed, I do it.

But the kicker is this, these things only happen once in a blue moon. It's a couple of steps back after 200 steps forward. Don't make being healthy a once in a blue moon thing.

If you seek for a 3 day program:

DAY 1
Squats
Flat barbell bench press
Standing overhead barbell press
Cable rows
Bodyweight/assisted pullups

DAY 2
Deadlifts
Incline barbell bench press
Seated overhead dumbell press
Bent over barbell rows
Lateral pulldown

DAY 3
Squats
Flat dumbell bench press
Seated overhead barbell press
Dumbell rows
Bodyweight / assisted pullups

Do 3-4 sets of 6-12 for each exercise. Focus on trying to increase the weights each week with good form.
