armpit pain - Tuesday, August 01, 2006 8:49 AM ( #1 )
Hi Guys,
I have had an injury for 3 years now.... well il explain....

in 2003 i was doing bench presses and the ouside part of my should started to hurt (where the bicep / triceps connect to the shoulder area, it felt like someone had stabbed it with a knife)

I left it for a week and it went away completely, I then carried on and a month later the pain cam back and never went away. After a few months of the pain I started doing weights again and realised that I could not make it feel anymore painful.... It hurt 24/7 and weights didnt agrevate it.

Funnily enough the pain went away pretty instant after these months of pain and left me with a sever ache stabbing pain under the armpit. I carried on doing weights.... I was in severe pain and had cortisone injections and Xrays, also had an MRI which showed nothing.

Had keyhole surgery and he said that I had pulled the bicep of the bone and he sewed it back.....?

I didnt touch weights for about 6 weeks although the pain never went away and never got any better at all, doctor didnt believe me and basically told me to live with it, although I cant im in too much pain!

I just thought it was a one off and the doctor had never seen anything like this before, I had learned to live with the pain a bit.

Last month the same thing happened again, this time to my other arm... It hurt in the same place on the should....so i left weights and havent touched them since.

The funny thing is though the pain started off at like the joint and within a couple of days has completely moved away from there and just kills the armpit.

I have decided to give up weights now for good as I value the health of my body more, I was just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems, i.e armpit pain in this manner??? or if anyone has any suggestions.

I hoping if I leave it for good time will heal it.

Also this may sound strange but the pain can be irritated by deodrants, I have tried millions of different ones and its not a problem with sensitive skin, as like I said when I lived for 3 years with pain in one arm, the good arm wasnt irritated by deodrant (just the bad one), now the other arm is injured it is now irritated, where it wasnt before the injury.

Cheers
Paul

The shoulder joint is a critical area in regards to importance of balanced muscular development.  Prime mover muscles in this area can cause injury to their respective antagonists by simply "winning the battle" of stabilizing movement and is quite common.  I don't believe however that the pain in your armpit from your new injury is directly related to the injury itself but rather the lack of mobility it would cause.  Certainly not being able to lift your elbow out as much would cause you to need to perspire more under that arm and eventually lead to some plugged sweat glands and/or ingrown hair in the area.  Try if you can to shave it down to the skin and use a product that allows you to sweat.  In the mean time get to the doctor, preferrably not the same idiot you saw before.  A tissue tear won't just heal on it's own.  If you see any bruising it should be treated as an emergency.

Like everything else there are good doctors and bad doctors.  It can be hard to tell.  I would suggest asking around or doing research and find a good doctor, and getting it looked at as quickly as possible.  As Michaeljohn said it is possible that it wont heal on its on.  You also might want to make sure what the other doctor did was the correct procedure.
