I hope i have posted this on the begginers section
I thought even athlets only needed 2 grams of protein per kilo of bodyweight .My personal trainer is telling me to have at least 50% protein per day which is really hard to do .
I have my amount up to 120grams a day .

I dont like to go by % totals....

how much do you weigh?

I recommend, and a strong standby, would be minimum 1g/lb bodyweight to 1.5g/lb.

well , for bodybuilders i think good would be 3-4g per 1kg of you bodyweight. Anyway - protein can't be overtaken. Well , in theory - it can be overtaken , but not practically.

well , i don't think that i am wrong. 1g of protein on 1kg of bodyweight is not enough even to maintain you bodyweight , not even talking about muscle building. That amount of protein is good enough for 2year old baby...

well you're right considering a kg is 2.2 pounds so that would mean no less than  2 or 2.5 grams of protein. Maybe not 3-4 grams, but some people do take that much. Smile

I personally love that...but I know it's about your happiness and comfort lol!

130 grams is a good starting place for you.
If you want to maintain your muscle, don't cut calories drastically!

You want to keep the fat freed up to be burned 24/7 except for a weekly cheat day.  Read that fat burn post and post any questions..you have some skilled listeners...

For gaining mass the recommended amount is 1 - 1.5 grams per pound of LEAN body mass

this is a general rule of thumb.

Protein shakes or protein supplements are a waste of $$ and time.  If you eat plenty of lean meats, your body produces the 20 amino acids neccessary.  This is a direct quote from my professor of Organic Chemistry.  Save your $$$ and eat lean meats.

I dont know about you but i live in a dorm, so a protein shake is easier to eat than finding a place to get a chicken breast post workout.

You should never take supplements to make up for your nutrition. Good nutrition should be a week long commitment not only on work out days.  If you eat enough meats, like tuna, beef, chicken and so on, the protein your taking  is subdued in your kidney and you’re throwing it away.

Proteins are one of the most important macromolecules in your body, they're involved in everything, from DNA complementary base pairings, to speeding up chemical reactions in your cells (enzymes), to making up your nails and hairs, so the body produces lots of it just about every hour.  If your diet is good, there’s no need for protein shakes.

Although, taking shakes may give the placebo effect that can motivate some athletes.

yeah i know that but he was saying eat meat insted of shakes. Im saying drink shakes and eat the lean meats. Of course you cant just drink shakes all day. I was just stating that it would be hard for me to eat a chicken breast at 7 am post workout.

There's this misconception that the muscles use protein when working out.  Muscles and cells use ATP (Adenosine tri-phosphate), not protein.  ATP is made from Glycogen in the mitochondria, as I said when you work out you spend your Glycogen storages that come form Carbohydrates and if Carbs. Are all spent, the body breaks down fat, 1 gram of fat stores twice as much energy as 1 gram of carbs.

The ONLY time when the body will start to break down protein is when a person is starving, so when there are no carbohydrates and there are no fats, the body will break down protein. I don’t think a person who is starving is going to work out.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there due to the fact that supplement companies pay most “experts”.

so we dont need protein at all then right. its just in every nutrition book ever made, and all the pyramid stuff produced by the goverment. It all so clear now, companies like cytosport and optimum are in league with Bush to make us buy this protein stuff. the only people that need it are dieing children in africa. Its the biggest cover up since watergate.

long story short i cant say i agree sorry. you can do an all carb diet and ill stick with mine and we will see gets better results.

I merely said protein shakes are a waste of $$$ if one eats properly, while doing this I gave you a scientific reason why I thought so.  This is my last post on this topic.  I just tried to help you.

That is incorrect.  Look it up..during anaerobic activity the body uses glycogen - that can come from either dietary carbs, stored glycogen or in the absence of sufficient carbs...from proteins (including from stored muscle).

quote:

The ONLY time when the body will start to break down protein is when a person is starving, so when there are no carbohydrates and there are no fats, the body will break down protein. I don’t think a person who is starving is going to work out.

That is incorrect.

Additionally in an insulin dominant state...the anaerobic systems energy burning is glycogen from carbs and/or proteins (including from stored muscle)...as will be the aerobic energy systems burning in an insulin dominant state.

This may also be true when in a caloric deficit as when cutting OR when your metabolism catches up with your food intake when you are bulking.

Supplements are an addition to, that is an add on to the right nutrition...the middle ground here is more accurate.  It can be a waste of time and it can also be a good addition to your nutrition program.
