affordable and reliable dumbbells?

i don't have the option of going to a gym regularly, but the only thing i really need for now is a small but somewhat comprehensive set of dumbbells. i'm not looking for uber weight either, 30 or 25 and below should be just fine. thanks :) edit: after some browsing, i'm thinking a pair each of 15 and 25lbs, of these: http://www.bodytrends.com/products/weights/gymbell.htm

PowerBlock Dumbbells Have never tried them but always liked the idea. You can expand. It's quick to switch the weight and that is what I would want. I had a dumbbell set long ago and doing a drop set or switching between wasy annoying. But this isn't like a cheap set either. They have various sets as well.

Drawback to saying "affordable" on a forum. $199 as a starter set is less then most pay for an iPod. But it's all relative. I've seen sets at Big5 that I used when I first started out. If you have the space, pick up a few different poundages there. Those are not too expensive and they are standard weights. Nothing fancy. But hey...

Why not just get a set of weights with dumbbell handles? You can adjust the amount of weight that way, it's a lot cheaper and much more versatile than a whole set- Sure it's a pain to change the plates sometimes, but I don't think us lifters should allow ourselves to be lazy when we're in the weight room- Right?

I dunno. I get pretty tired of unloading the barbell after deadlifts. I was considering outsourcing that.

A switch bitch!! What a great idea! I have a set of interchangeables and I hate them because I like to smack my weights together at the top and squeeze them. That just trashes these things. I saw a decent set with a rack at Sam's for $300. They went up to 40 pounds I believe. I considered it, but I rarely work out at home anymore.

Add a hundred bucks for shipping. Wow. What a great deal. Looks like it's perfect for the guy who drives the Viper and pays for the $2.50 gas. Betcha I could make them rust.

And gee, they top out at 52.5lbs. WOOT!!!! Not worth the time of day for me. Geez. Let's see gym membership at $35 a month for access to a wide range of fun toys or $500 for very limited dumbbells. I've toyed with creating a home gym but I just can't see it right now. Paul

i found out that at the local Sport Mart, standard hex dumbbells are quite cheap. i got my pair of 15s and my pair of 25s (mainly for my delts and alternating chest work) at 8 for each 15 and 12 for each 25.

Just buy regular dumbells, they're expensive at first but will last forever.
