i have never tried deadlifts before, but from what i saw at www.bodybuilding.com, Stiff-Legged Barbell Deadlifts and regular Deadlifts (for your lower back) are both the exact same exercise. is this true or did they make a mistake?

They probably didn't clarify the difference enough.

In my understanding, a standard deadlift involves some knee flexion, and a pronounced squat.  without rounding your back, bend at the knees (do not let your upper body tilt foreward more than 45 degrees), and pick the bar up off the floor, straightening your legs and your back at the same time (I concentrate on driving my heels into the floor, and squeezing my glutes together through the movement).  The bar should scrape your shins, knees, and the lower part of your quads through the whole movement.

This is where I'm not too sure on the distinction, but I think a stiff-legged deadlift is executed without any knee flexion (hence, "stiff" legged).  Get the bar up to the top of the movement, but only lower it to just below your kneecaps.  You knees should be slightly bent -not locked- and your butt should not drop any during the movement.

If I'm wrong, someone tell me to pull my head out of my azz.

thanks, Vegg.  i think a standard deadlift will be a challenge to do. that **** can break your back so it's VERY important to do it right but performing a squat at once...yeah, it will be hard. i gotta work on it.

by the way, i keep hearing alot of talk on how doing a certain amount of repetitions will change your body in a certain way. for instance, doing 12 reps will increase muscle mass/size, doing 8 reps will increase endurance, etc.   is this a fact? my goal is to increase size...so maybe i should do more than 8 repititions, which is what i am doing now.

Actually, that's somewhat backward. Higher repetitions with lighter weight will build endurance, while lower repetitions with heavier weight (all-out effort) will stimulate growth. If you're looking for the mass-building benefits of deadlifts (and they are profound, mind you), pick a weight you can barely do 10 reps with.

Just remember to keep your lumbar straight (not rounded), and don't bend over more than 45 degrees, you'll be good to go Smile
