a few questions - 11/6/2003 8:21:23 PM  1 votes

I bought protein powder the other day for the first time ever. My problem is that I'm too skinny and I can never gain weight even though i eat well. To gain weight i decided to buy the protein powder and combined with my fitness class where i lift weights I think i can finally stop being skinny.

my questions are (my main goal is to gain weight)

1) when should i drink the protein shakes? i was told to do it after i work out and before i go to sleep. The problem is that I get home about an hour after working out. Should i still do this or is there other times which would benefit me more? (before or after eating )

2) does it matter/is there a big difference between using milk or water to make the protein shakes?

3) what kinds of food should i eat which will help me more? which ones should I avoid?

4) what exercises should I do at the gym? (right now im concentrating on chest exercises)

5) after I drink the protein shake can I still drink other stuff? (soda, water) or i cant drink anything else for the rest of the day?
your help is appreciated!

1) when should i drink the protein shakes?

When you get home should be fine for you. Whenever you can get it after your workout would be best.

quote:

2) does it matter/is there a big difference between using milk or water to make the protein shakes?

I could never drink milk or water in protein shakes, i used OJ. But milk digests slower than water, im not sure about the whole process but i believe it has to do with the processing of the sugar in milk.

3) what kinds of food should i eat which will help me more? which ones should I avoid?

Chicken or canned tuna is a great source for protein. I would load up on greens (vegies) and fruits. Or course you want to avoid junk food but everyonce and a while is okay. Pasta and breads are fatty. Rice is always a good choice.

4) what exercises should I do at the gym? (right now im concentrating on chest exercises)

I would do more than chest. Do a whole body workout but spread out the muscle groups to different days. Ex: Mon: Chest/Tri's, Wed: Legs/shoulders, Friday: Back/bi's.

5) after I drink the protein shake can I still drink other stuff? (soda, water) or i cant drink anything else for the rest of the day?

Yes, being hydrated is a good thing for your body. Soda is a diuretic, so if you drink 12oz, you will loose 18oz in the can. So drink more water, juice, etc. The goal of the protein shake is to build muscle. Protein is what muscle builds on. But it is very good for you to be hydrated as well.

Welcome to DB jon252!

My only additions:

1) Your body really needs that protein ASAP. If you don't get home after working out then take a shaker bottle and a Tupperware or packet of protein with you after the gym. 20 minutes or less is ideal.

2) Not really. Milk will add more calories. Which if you want to put on some weight, isn't a bad thing.

3) Look in the Nutrition forum for the Top post on Sample Bulk Plan. Eat that and you'll put on some decent weight.

4) Try the Max-OT guide. If you aren't advanced that's fine. But the summary is.. work all your body parts and do the heavy basics. CPL did a great article on why every muscle group should be worked which is in the Training forum.

5) Sure can. Especially water.

Keep the questions coming! Smile

thank you for answering my questions! I just have 3 more that I forgot to ask

1) is there any precautions I should take on the time differences from each time I take the protein shakes? for example I shouldnt take the second before 5 hours pass after the first one? anything like that?

2) should I take the protein shake on days I don't go to the gym?

3) (relates to number 2) if I can still drink the protein shakes in days I don't go to gym (i don't go saturdays and sundays) at what time of the day should i take it? since i am not working out those days I don't know when to take it (since i take it after i work out and before i go to sleep)

so when do you recommend i take it? in the morning and the second one before going to sleep? or after dinner and then before going to sleep? what do you recommend?

your help is appreciated!

Get 25-50% of your daily protein from the shakes. Maybe start off with an AM, afternoon and before bed shake. Get protein in every 2-3 hours during the day. There's no precautions. Just don't rely on shakes to meet the needs.

2) should I take the protein shake on days I don't go to the gym?

Yes.

Supplement the same on a training day as a non-training day. It doesn't change.

Time:

9am
12pm
6pm
+1 before bed

You would get real protein from 7am (breakfast); 11am (snack); 3pm (snack) and 6pm (dinner)

You can eliminate the 6pm one if you want. This would just be a sample idea of when to drink those shakes. To keep the protein going all day long, every 2-3 hours.

Smile You will be on the way to some serious gains. And that comes from reading, learning, asking questions and then following thru. Keep the questions coming jon252.

wow thanks for the help! I just have 2 more just curious

"Your body really needs that protein ASAP. If you don't get home after working out then take a shaker bottle and a Tupperware or packet of protein with you after the gym. 20 minutes or less is ideal. "

1) does the protein shake lose effect if you don't take it right away after you make it?
or do you have to drink it right after you make it? the reason I ask this is because I was thinking of putting the protein shake in a water bottle and freeze it and then take it to the gym so by the time im done working out i can drink it (im at the gym for 2 hours and it takes me about an hour on the bus to get there) I thought of this so that the protein doesnt go bad with the heat, so by the time im done with the work out the protein shake will still be a bit cold if put to the freezer before I take it. Do you think this is a good idea?

2) You spoke about water. I see people at the gym and many have water bottles. When am I supposed to drink water when working out? is there an specific time? for example 30 minutes after starting, then again 30 minutes later (just some examples I don't know) or just whenever im thirsty?

3) is it good to add bananas to protein shakes? I heard that some people make them using bananas. How many do you use? (what is this good for?) and also some people make protein shakes using juice? (apple juice? orange juice?)
thanks again for the help!

It's not the shake the loses the effect it's the window of opportunity you have to quickly give your body a surge of amino acids to help aid recovery and keep muscle from breaking down.

I wouldn't freeze it. I'd simply add the protein power to the shaker bottle and when you are done.. add water and instant protein shake.

You can. I just get mine from the fountain but I drink a gallon a day.. starting when I wake up till I go to bed. Sometimes more. If you are thirsty it's a sign that you are already dehydrated and your body is asking for water. Fulfill the need beforehand and you will hardly ever be thirsty.

Drink 1 liter every 3 hours.. space it out. Fill up a 1 liter bottle and drink 3 of them during the day. Don't drink 3 liters all before 10am. Then again, don't do that after 10pm either.

I know you want examples but there's none really. Just drink 3 liters of water a day.. spaced out evenly. You can do that while you work out.. before and after. Just don't drink so much all at once that you feel bloated.

quote:

1 banana. That's plenty. I don't use juice. Don't need the sugar. And the protein I use is tasty enough. Add some frozen fruit like blackberries or something along with the banana and make a protein smoothie. That works well.

What else ya got? Smile

Thanks for your help! I have just a few more questions.

As you know I am trying to gain weight (too skinny) and have been working out in school. Right now I have 18 days left of vacation and I have not taken the protein shake because I thought it is better to wait till i get back to school and can go to the gym again (I only use the gym in school and I don't have any equipment other than a small weight to work out with so the gym at school is the only place I can work out)

1. Should I still drink the protein shake even though im not working out? If yes to that question should I still drink it twice a day? or just once a day?
2. How many days a week should I drink the protein? (if yes to question 1). Since Im not working out should I drink it less (maybe every 2 days and not every day)
3. should I just I stop taking it and save it till i get back to school and can go to the gym again? (what i have been doing)
4. Are there any exercises I can do with no equipment for the chest area? the only equipment I have is a small 10 pound weight.

thanks for your help!
