Starting Strength suggests a tennis ball to cue your chest and chin position, and looking at the ground 5-6 feet in front of you. It also features a photo of someone looking up captioned "Don't do this, you fool."

Sometimes you see lifters in PL meets looking up because they are "snaking" to get the weight up any way they can. You probably snake when you're failing on pushups. It when you lift your head to initiate a pull up through the shoulders and eventually through the back and then the legs. You literally look like a snake.

Chin should be tucked. Looking up creates cervical hyperextention = bad. Keep your neck and head in line with your body. The idea of having a soda can or tennis ball under your chin will do just that.

lol wow... I wont even go into how ridiculous that post was IBB

Coldfire is right, dont look up. Look down OR straight ahead works too, try it. Your spotter should not be touching you unless you are struggling(in this case he is) the littlest touch can help you. In highschool they tell you to spot squats like that but its actually a crutch and a lot of guys depend on it, when going heavy you SHOULD have a spotter, but not assisting like that. Its like putting one finger under the bar on bench, it makes a difference.

Everyone else already said what you needed to hear, take smoundzous advice and take the weight down, Its nothing to be embarrassed about, and you WILL see results from the proper range of motion. In the video you really can see that that is too much weight, it looks like you are having trouble keep your back straight, again your spotter is helping you keep your back straight.

and once again Kudos to you for posting a video.

You don't even know what he said so butt out. Some of you mother ****ers are really starting to piss me the **** off.   If someone makes a personal attack towards me and I wish to delete it, I think I am justified to do so... just like I do for some of you.

The fact that you are acting really immature especially for being a moderator is saying things to other members...

Your right I dont know what he said, but you can say whatever you want however you want? hmm...

You really need to present yourself better, mod or not, the fact that your getting so emotionally upset just isnt right. This all started because you commented on what he said, and made it a point to disagree with everything he said, even though he gave the OP the correct advice, I dont know if you were just indirectly trying to start a confrontation OR you just didnt know the correct form...im leaning towards the first.

Coldfire may act cynical and elitist sometimes, I dont necessarily agree with that, but he is very knowledgeable about this sport of bodybuilding and lifting. You may not like him, but you should at the very least respect him and his knowledge.

I could care less if im pissing you off or not, this is an internet forum. I made no attacks on you, simply pointed out your mistake and lack of leadership/responsibility as a mod. So FFS calm down and take it to PM if you need to deal with coldfire. Ive read some pretty ****ed up posts on this site, go back and ask yourself did that post really need to be deleted? and was that smartass, haha I have internet power really necissary?

OH STFU your making me sick...

On one side we got Coldfire who has to be correct about a squat, who the **** cares its a squat?!?! Your neck has nothing to do with the workout so it don't even matter...

On the otherside we got Nm0oney34 who is obviously in love with cold and is totally kissing his ass just to exploit someone who is "abusing" there power...

I tell you what if someone insulted me and I had the power I'd do just as he did...

This is like IBB's home hes got over a kajillion posts so he certainly does not have to stand for someone name calling if hes got the power to stop it... Even if IBB came off as an asshole which it doesn't look like to me it doesn't give coldfire the right to go and say some ****, he should of been the "bigger man" and just stfu... Nuff said lock the topic please.

Your post is as relevant as your understanding of the neck positioning in a squat.

I thought that was cool, perfect or not, full or 1/4.  You got your ass in the gym, and even taped some of it and its all about your motivation and your drive anyway and it seems you were pretty pumped and rearing to go so good for you!
I don't think you posted this as a 'this is how you do squats' deal so picking on form etc is not needed and it seems you got ripped alot here but don't worry about any of that, I just use the block button!
I am with ripppedchick and ditto on her for the ballsy part and that anyone wants to pick on it, throw a vid up yourself.
I vary my squats so mine are not always atg or partial......its all relative to what your are doing.  IN this case you wanted to lift so much for so many reps and this is how you went about it with a partial......so what.  I think its cool!!

RE: You Asked for squat video and i deliver - Saturday, March 22, 2008 7:37 AM ( #43 )
I quick note on posting etiquette:
You are welcome to post your opinions but see if you can do so without attacking or arguing.  threads are meant for people to post their opinion on the subject and others to read and decided what they want on what they agree or disagree with but it sucks to read a thread like this and all I see are a few members here who want to include their input but cannot seem to do so without it being directed negatively to someone trying to prove who is right or wrong.......I really don't want nor enjoy reading that and I am sure I am not alone so if you do not want posts deleted you can include your input without mentioning negatives on others.
You do not have to agree nor like others here, but then please just be mature and ignore them.  Include your input in a neutral way.  There are ways to get your point across with tact...........please apply some TACT to your posts YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE - MAINLY A HANDFUL OF YOU!  I hate to think people read this thinking that this is a silly childs board with little boys posting.........like it or not, that is how it comes across.
Now if you want to continue on this thread, post with reference to you only, not to others or how dumb you think they are or whatever........

So, you think that if you want to lift more weight it is ok to do partial squats? What about saving the knees and the back?

Regarding your post about etiquette: What's wrong with arguing? Forums are there for arguments, not only agreeing with everyone and saying everything is cool.
Check the thread and you will see that a moderator starting attacking and deleting posts. Everything was fine till then.
Now, I don't care if someone argues or disagrees with me, as long as he can back it up. But, if he speaks **** just to annoy me, I will reply what I find appropriate.

I got my weight up by starting with partials and working the range over time then up the weight and start at partials and then there are days I would do atg with less weight but yeah, I think there is an occasion for each situation and there are other ways to increase weight like rep and set manipulation etc.

As for arguing, forums or at least this one is not for arguing, its for learning and sharing info on fitness, exercise and the like.  You are definatley not obligated to agree but you are obligated to use tact - then it becomes debating which is much more productive.

I have seen some of your posts which are not replies to anyone attacking you but are worded kinda rough and insult and or rub others in a way which begins the back and forth crap.  People want to learn and share not really read arguements or posts which seem rudely expressed.
We do not want to scare or indimidate people, its meant to attract new members rather than disuede them.

I firmly agree with backing up what you say but in some topics its on debatable subjects and debates are fine but you can get your points across without certain wordings which are basically magnets for drama or worded in a way which gets a rise out of people or just plainly insults them, then it just comes across as an annoying 'know it all' and you lose credibility -  but although I may not always like how you word your posts, I do know there are a few of us who do find you have added some great input and some really well worded posts so I know you are capable and its simply because of that, that banning has not happened.
As for replying how you find appropriate......actually as per TOS you will reply as is appropriate according to TOS and everyones courtesy - that is my whole  point of this speech!
I think Marc and many of us mods are pretty diplomatic and let a lot go in the name of personal opinions and this forum is very very fair,  we ban according to the rules not who we like or dislike so we are lucky in that way as many forums are not like that and many have too much flaming which we want to avoid.

We always love positive additions to the board, love info you are willing to share and more than willing to listen, whether we agree or not and we won't tell you your stupid because you may think differently or believe differently so all I am asking is that you have that same respect.

Fair enough. Show me where I told anyone he is stupid cause he thinks differently? Did you read the whole thread?

Some of my posts might sound rough but it is usually with people who talk the same way. I have seen much worse posts than mine that weren't moderated.

I believe you need to choose your moderators more carefully.

RE: You Asked for squat video and i deliver - Saturday, March 22, 2008 4:04 PM ( #48 )
Heres a great example of insulting post, you seriously could not have worded that better?  No one attacked you here, you fired first, did you expect any friendly replies and did you think this helped anyone???
http://www.discussbodybuilding.com/fb.aspx?m=359934

I also noted many of your posts are edited and I believe it was in the breath holding post where many posts are edited where I had noticed somthing to the effect but they are all edited now.....which were not before so obviously you knew which to edit.....you then know which were worth editing hence you know better.
btw I do not choose the mods but I can tell you one thing IBB def has more posts which are positive vs once which turn sour, he knows how to give advice without saying 'just do it' or that his way is the only way............but your posts come across that way and I know I saw one which said something to the effect of doing it this way is right and anyone who disagrees is stupid.....I just cannot find it now....
http://www.discussbodybuilding.com/fb.aspx?m=353833
also, its fine not to agree with the mods or anyone but that does not make them wrong.....nor does it make you wrong if they do not agree........that is my point, you seem to come across in your post that certain things are as you say, end of story..........nothing is one sided so its not hard to indicate that 'imo vasalva is safe' but to say 'vasalva is safe' blanket statement is wrong and that was just an example, most of your posts come across that way, that is all I am saying.
and look at the wording here, like a bully.......'you better not listen to any article on the net......' http://www.discussbodybuilding.com/fb.aspx?m=354756
do you finally get my point here?  I am not wasting all this time because I don't care.  I do care about this forum, the members, including you and the TOS which is why I am desperately trying to get through to you vs just being a huge bag and replying with similar tone back atcha......which solves nothing.  me trying to be nice here.........
I read the whole thread and do think knees and back need care but as you see there are various ways to do things not just a right or wrong way so I do appreciate your view, just learn to appreciate the views of others even if you do not agree, go ahead and debate but without digs would be good.
And I have read great posts by you as well and I acknowlege that, just so you don't think I did not notice and that I am ganging up on you.
You and IBB def have differing opinions but it solves nothing to insult each other, no one is learning and just getting more confused, but you can debate his ideas as he can yours without insulting.
You cannot expect him or any other mod to be an angel, if they get pinched, they may pinch back but when you word things in a way which does not irk others, you won't see anyone replying in an uncalled for way and if so, we will be watching.  You deserve the same respect and should not be attacked either and again, you have added some great input so know that your knowlege is appreciated even if some of us may not always agree or whatever.

RE: You Asked for squat video and i deliver - Saturday, March 22, 2008 5:01 PM ( #49 )
Italianangel.. It  seems I may have started this thread going in a bad direction with my first post critiquing his form..

A little explanation.. I'm not one to really blast someone simply because they are unable to perform a lift with near perfect form.. not many can anyway.. even those of us who think we are great form can easily be picked apart by a trained eye..

But anyway.. the OP stated in another thread that he could do a full ATG 500lbs squat, BTW.. he's a JR in HS:)    So I made the comment, I know 250lbs men who have trained twenty years that can't do that.. the Ripped said something along the lines of post a video... Thus... he posted this video..

In short.. I was only pointing out that the video he posted was far from being an ATG squat and if he can't do it with what he's squatting in the video.. I fell confident in saying he would be hard pressed to even hold 500lbs on his shoulders.. much less do a quarter/half or full Squat..

Anyway.. I'm sorry that I started this off on the wrong tone.. and I wasn't trying to be mean to a kid who obviously is proud and has some good self confidence... I only suggested dropping a 100lbs or so off the bar and work on form before trying heavier weight and getting hurt..

I'm the one who seems to have spurred the negativity in this thread and that was never my intention..

BTW.. I like IBB and Coldfire.. Very different individuals..... and if it means anything.. Over the past couple of weeks I've noticed Coldfire has been getting in touch with his more gentle caring side... personally.. enjoy the old Coldfire.. the one who has absolutely no sense of humor and is straight the point.. but that's just me
There is never enough time to do everything, but there is always enough time to do the most important thing

Even if IBB came off as an asshole which it doesn't look like to me it doesn't give coldfire the right to go and say some ****, he should of been the "bigger man" and just stfu... Nuff said lock the topic please.

and...

ou can say what ever cold fire... Oh wait no you can't, because I can just delete it Smile

thats such a cute a smug attitude...especially from a mod.

You don't even know what he said so butt out. Some of you mother ****ers are really starting to piss me the **** off. If someone makes a personal attack towards me and I wish to delete it, I think I am justified to do so... just like I do for some of you.

seriously your going to defend that? IBB acts like he owns these forums, and this is a perfect example. I will credit him, he CAN give some good advice, and he can talk and act decent. There is no reason for him to act like that when I chimed in. Once again was CF's post really THAT bad, and did it warrant that smug egotistical response?

Coldfire can come off as rough, he gets right to the point. But what he says is correct advice, youll see in this thread IBB purposefully started things.

and containing to this thread breachin and IBB are the only ones who couldnt keep a civil adult attitude about things. This is about this thread, not how many posts anyone has. just because people dont have 1,000's of posts does not mean they are not knowledgeable or ignorant, or that they dont just read and not post

IMO you should be more careful about who becomes mods, this thread is not the first I have read where he does something he shouldnt.

*Smoundzou what happened in this thread had NOTHING to do with you, he did post for critique. And I agree from what i have read, coldfire has been trying to be a bit nicer especially with the newer people lately.

We always love positive additions to the board, love info you are willing to share and more than willing to listen, whether we agree or not and we won't tell you your stupid because you may think differently or believe differently so all I am asking is that you have that same respect.
Linda

Fair enough. Show me where I told anyone he is stupid cause he thinks differently? Did you read the whole thread?

Some of my posts might sound rough but it is usually with people who talk the same way. I have seen much worse posts than mine that weren't moderated.

I believe you need to choose your moderators more carefully.
