I'm digging through here and can't seem to find the answers I'm looking for with this.  I posted the question on a guys thread over in the nutrition forum (Protein AND creatine???? )and nobody bit on it, now the thread with the question is getting buried, anyways without further adeu...

(In response to a guy asking when during his day he should be taking creatine.)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought creatine levels stayed pretty constant in your body as long as you're taking it.  The companies usually reccomend a loading period to get it into your system, then a maintenance dose(for lack of better terms) to keep those levels up.  I wouldn't think it would matter when you took your creatine, pre or post, as long as you're keeping that maintenance dose daily.

As long as we're on the subject of creatine here's another question I got...

Why do most creatines come with delivery systems (Sugar)?  If the creatine levels are bieng maintained why would you need a quicker method of getting the creatine into your system?  It's a little contradicting if you ask me, maybee my understanding of how creatine levels work in your body is a little off though.

Well, the theory is that creatine gets somewhat depleted after your workout because your body was using it during your workout, and therefore more if it degrades into creatinine and passed out of your system. If that's the case, then your body might be able to absorb a bit more after your workout than at other times of the day. But the benefit is probably small, if it exists at all.

The idea of taking sugar (or a meal) with creatine is that "food" increases the amount of digestive enzymes and whatnot that your gut secretes, and tells your digestive system to start absorbing stuff, which in turn causes it to absorb more of the creatine you just ingested. This could easily be true -- that's why vitamins and many medicines tell you to take them with food (although that also can reduce stomach irritation that some would otherwise cause).

So then for the average gym rat, like most on here seem to be, the loading phase and worrying about when you take your creatine, or which kind of creatine you take should really be second fiddle to just taking the creatine.  If you are an advanced guy worrying about competitions and the like is when you need every ounce of the creatine, a 200 pound guy that hits the gym more as a hobby than a job should just be concerned with getting the creatine in the first place over how many minutes before or after his workout he needs to be taking it.

Any thoughts?

Creatine is for replenishing after intense workouts.  If you are a hobbiest, and only fart around in the gym for a fitness like effect as opposed to wanting to be a monster, creatine is not for you.  Creatine allows your body to do more work because it allows work to be done with less muscle fibers incorporated during any give task.  Creatine is to be taken with a substance that gets drawn into the bloodstream easily, and in more bioavailable when in a warm beverage.

Most people do not need to use creatine.  It is a product for bodybuilders that need to replace the loss after a daily intense workout.  If you are not a serious bodybuilder, you are wasting your money.
Most bodybuilding supplements, are just that, bodybuilding supplements.  I would wager a bet that 90% of the bodybuilding supplements out there are being used incorrectly and by the wrong people for the wrong reason.

But I do thank all you for using the supplements, as it keeps companies in business and keeps the market compeditive so that those who do have a need for the product don't lose their shirts buying them.

Sorry if I come across angry, but somebody has to be more stern because too many people are going broke and getting little to no results from their time due to undereducation and false dreams presented by outlandish advertising promises.

Yeah, I wouldn't stress too much about the details. That stuff is really small potatoes. Almost anyone can get more out of improving their diet than they can by changing the timing of their creatine. I mean, if we want to start talking about details, maybe we should all be careful about how we trim our nose hairs to maximize respiration.
