I have spent the last 4 weeks on a healthy diet, doing 2x daily cardio and lifting nearly every day. Went from 228 Lbs to 221 Lbs and hit a plateau because of all the cardio so now after a day of eating unhealthy I am gonna hit the fat hard. Just thought I would keep a log of my month long journey into the velocity diet.

Here is what I'll be doing:

Nutrition:

6x day: 1.5 servings Evo-Pro with water
2-3x day: Omega 3-6-9 Pills
6x day: .5 servings flax seed
Pre workout : DS Xceed
Post workout (3-4 times a week): DS Replenish
Multivitamin
DS Lean Extreme
DS Glucophase
Hot Rox Xtreme

Workouts:

three workouts a week with light cardio after

day 1: Chest/Biceps
day 2: Back/Triceps
day 3: Legs/Shoulders

also will mix in core/stability on off days

Starting Stats

Height: 6'3"
Weight: 221 Lbs
Body Fat (approx): 19%
Waist (goin by pant size here, don't have a tape): 36"

--------------------------------------------

Day 1 of 30

Today was the first day of the velocity diet. So far today I have taken 2 shakes and my post workout shake. I worked out my back and triceps today. Forgot to take my Xceed before the workout. Hot Rox Xtreme is on the way so I was without them today. Should be here in a day or two. Workout wasn't too bad my triceps blew up more than usual today. Did a very small amount of walking afterwards and then some abs. Going to try to get my body adjusted to little amounts of cardio since its adjusted to two miles a day HIIT running.

Day 2 of 30

Weight: didn't weigh today

Finishing up day 2 right now. One more shake to go. Didn't workout today, will be going to do legs and shoulders tomorrow which is the most challenging day by far. Got my hot rox xtreme in today and took a pill this evening. Will start with two in the morning. Watery shakes are already getting old but no big deal. Feeling a little shaky this evening, body adjusting to the change. Tomorrow will be a test of how well workouts will go with the carb and calorie deficit.

Day 3 of 30

Weight: 216.5 lbs (-4.5 lbs)

Today I woke up at 8:00 AM and took my Hot Rox Xtreme. Right now I am taking one pill twice a day. Week two I'll take 2 pills in the morning and then 1 in the afternoon and then halfway through week three I'll make it 2 and 2. Anyways, I played some Fight Night 3 until 9 or so and then took my first shake of the day (Evo-Pro vanilla with some flax seed). Proceeded to go to the gym for leg day. I honestly had a stronger workout than I expected. My legs got tired a little quicker than normal but I also felt like they got better work and pump than usual. Afterwards I did abs and then played some basketball which wore me out quicker than usual (which is good because previously my body had adjusted to my cardio). I weighed myself after my leg workout and before my cardio and I was at 216.5 lbs (I am sure it's mostly water weight at this point). Not having any problems with the diet so far and I don't expect to have any from the mental aspect. If we can avoid any physical problems then I have no doubt that I'll finish. More tomorrow....

Day 4 of 30

Weight: didn't weigh today

Nothing exciting at all today... more protein, flax seed, omega 3-6-9... Tomorrow is a chest/bicep day and I'll be adding some cardio into the end of it, I wanted to wait a week but I am having a hard enough time sitting around all day on my off days. I'll do some low intensity jogging this week, and increase it throught the program. Then I'll max my cardio out the week after I finish the diet to help transition back to food as well as prepare for a bulking cycle. BTW probolic-sr orange cream sucks... evo pro is my favorite and has something like 26g protein, 2g carbs, 2g fats.

Day 5 of 30

Weight: 212.5 lbs

So now in 5 days my weight has gone from 221 to 212.5. I figure its the low end of a flucuation combined with lost water weight. Today was chest and biceps which is the worst day of the week for me because I can't do as much weight on those days as I would like due to the risks on the rotater (chest) as well as range of motion restriction possibilities. Tight, bulky chest and biceps = no good for a pitcher. On all my chest lifts I don't go further than 90 degress with my arms. I usually just do 3x10 on biceps and be done with them just to get a little blood there. Afterwards I did some core/stability stuff and some wide arm pushups followed by rotator cuff exercises.

I am not sure what my bf % is now. I know when I started 6 weeks ago I was at 22% so once I am done with this thing i'll get another body fat analysis and see how much muscle went with the weight loss. Okay, off to go take my 2nd hot rox extreme for the day.

edit: Went back to the gym this evening and did some abs and light cardio... also use a tape to measure my stomach around the biggest part which was 38"... we'll see where its at at the end of this

Day 6 of 30

Weight: didn't weigh

Well, I am starting to crave foods now... Shakes are sucking more and more but I have no intentions of stopping, this will pass like everything else. I haven't eaten one solid food since last monday and tomorrow I get to have oatmeal. goody. I'll actually put some evo-pro in it, makes the oatmeal taste good. Last night the fam had fajitas... smelled amazing. Anyways, I have been trying to work on my posture but I think my tendons are messed up in my neck/should. I have always slouched and slumped so I spent the last few days focusing on keeping my shoulders down and back and my tendons are real sore now and it hurts to pull my shoulders back. Thinkin about see the doc and seeing whats up. Alrighty, time for shake #36 on the week and #3 for the day. Until next time....

Edit: on a side note, this diet really shows you that eating is as much of an event as it is necessary. Its hard to go out anymore because it seems like no matter what you do it ends up out to eat somewhere. Your friend calls you up "Hey, whats up? Wanna go get some food or something?" or "Hey, we're all going to a movie and then probably out to eat" or even worse "hey, big party tonight, lets get druuuuunk", in which case you will intake way too much alcohol and then eat really bad afterwards.

What is your carb intake like?  Are you following the diet to the letter?

Problem with Evo-Pro is that I don't think it has the carbs you need.  Which is why the T-Nation Velocity Diet had you using a low carb meal replacement shake. 100g of carbs per day which is very low but still... there's carbs.

Now if you are somehow getting a low amount of carbs elsewhere, that's what I'm curious about because from your supplement line up, I don't see where you are getting any carbs in at all.

Evo-Pro only has 3g of carbs per serving.  It is intentionally a high quality protein but not a meal replacement.

If you aren't getting carbs somehow, you aren't truly following the Velocity Diet.

I could have missed it somewhere in your posts.

Yeah you are right I probably do need to get more carbs in per day. Right now I guess I am getting about 30g carbs/day on off days and 60g on training days. Think I should add about 40g more per day?

It should be around 100g.

No wonder this diet is so difficult.  You have NO ENERGY!

I'm not a fan of low carb diets anyway and this is a low carb diet.  Basically you've got a NO carb diet going.  Adjust it ASAP.

While I like Evo-Pro it's not a meal replacement and contains no carbs.  That's why he (Chris Shurgat) recommended that particular low carb meal replacment shake option.

And since it's mostly a shake diet with only 1 real food meal a week, you can't exactly break the diet by adding carbs via real sources.

You need to find a low carb meal replacement shake and use that.  Otherwise, you're basically doing an extremely low carb diet.  Your body is craving energy at this time.  Adjust it as quickly as you can.

Also Marc, For information's sake what would happen if I stayed at this amount of carbs (because I haven't felt that tired) for the remainder of the diet? Would it just be that much harder to add carbs back into my diet or are there other effects?

You'll be tired most of the time.  Your body will start to burn protein as fuel (ketosis I think).

It's like an Atkins diet.  Very low carbs but in your case, no carbs really.

I'd guess after the 28 days and you start eating real foods again that have carbs in them, you'll gain a substantial amount of weight back with muscle glycogen.

The REAL deal is...

Did you or will you lose any body fat during this time and maintain the muscle?

What you are doing is bascially a no carb diet and high protein.  It might pan out well for that short of a time period but my ONLY point is...

If you are following the Velocity Diet, you aren't doing it correctly.  You have made significant modifications to it.

I mean, you can stick with what you have and see how it goes but it's not really the Velocity Diet at that point.  It's your modification of it.

And I wouldn't very good workouts considering your carbs are so low.  Just my opinion based on what I've felt.

Day 7 of 30 (END OF WEEK 1)

Weight: 211.5 lbs (-9.5 lbs)

Well I ordered the Metabolic Drive yesterday to up the daily carb intake. Also my workouts are pretty good still because I have about 15g carbs before the workout 10g during, 15g right after and another 15g over the next 30 minutes. I had an excellent back/tricep workout this morning even though I do notice I get to failure quicker than before, muscles don't have nearly as much endurance but none the less a good workout. I went ahead and had my one meal yesterday evening after I saw that he suggested a regular meal over oatmeal so I had a steak, some steamed brocolli and black beans. Solid food for the first time in a week was great. Also I weighed today thinking I would have probably put back on a tad bit of weight with the carbs and heavier food in me but still lost a pound since two days ago. I think actually this may workout to my benefit that I had very low carbs this week, and gonna add more because the way I look at it is this...

Week 1: aprox 25g carbs on non-workout days, 65g on workout days; no or very light cardio; 1 pill 2x daily hot rox (what I did this week)
Week 2: aprox 50g carbs on non-workout days, 90g on workout days; light jogging maybe a mile or so; 2 hot roxs in the morning, 1 in the evening
Week 3: aprox 75g carbs on non-workout days, 115g on workout days; increase the distance on cardio; 2 pills 2x daily hot rox
Week 4: aprox 100g carbs on non-workout day, 145g on workout days; increase the intensity on cardio; 2 pills 2x daily hot rox

I think that will allow me to slowly start increasing my carbs into my diet while maintaining the fat loss then I'll transition into my post-vdiet plan and start slowing adding meals back in while I mix in some HIIT and continue increasing my cardio. What do you think Marc?

Day 8 of 30

Weight: didn't weigh

Today is an off day from lifting. It is also the start of week two so I took 2 pills of hot rox this morning instead of 1. I must say that at this point this diet hasn't done anything to slow or prevent my cravings of food (or some said unhealthy cravings). All the fast food commercials kill me but I usually sit there and watch them and think about eating it... builds character. The taste of the shakes are starting to make me sick though, not that they taste THAT bad just the same thing over and over. I had a cup of 2% milk with my first shake to add 12g of carbs and a little protein as well. This week I am trying to add 25g of carbs a day and I don't have my metabolic drive yet. I figured by taking it early in the day it won't effect my diet even though it has sugars (simple sugars). I can tell huge differences in my body, right now I am in the best shape I have ever been and will continue to increase that. I'll be interested to get my bf% at the end of all of this. Time for Week 2, Shake #3.

According to Chris (author of this diet) the average monthly expense will be around $400-500 to do this diet as written.

How does this compared to what you are spending?
