Working Out When Sore - Wednesday, June 24, 2009 6:08 AM ( #1 )
Should it be avoided at all costs or is it just a minor nuisance?

Muscle soreness to the point of not being able to move, it's your call. Ideally, you could do light aerobic work just to increase blood flow to the muscle tissues, ligaments, and tendons.

Muscle soreness to the point of "damn, that hurts."-don't go.

Muscle soreness to the point of one selected area(ie: shoulder) that would effect other lifts, i'd say don't go.

You're not going anywhere by putting yourself at risk for injury, if anything, do it the next day.

It depends on the degree of sore. PearlJammer summed it up.

however I will state that if I wait til I wasn't sore to work out, I never would. I am sore every day, you get used to it.

Im sure he is just referring to DOMS, in which case he needs to suck it up and go.

The body will adapt in a short time, it sucks but if you wait your body will never adapt to the load.

Yeah, I think it was DOMS as well, since I was benching for the first time in my life, lol. I dunno, I just asked because I read somewhere that if you do, you'll overtrain yourself and you'll plateau, then you'll have to take months off etc...               Thanks, lol

Over training is so hard to do...you would have to TRY very very hard to over train.

I dont know what program your on, but if you wait your going to just be as sore next week. Follow whatever schedule your workout is and you will see a big difference next week as your body is adapting to the work load your doing.

Also in the same sense, if your doing anything strenuous for the first time your obviously going to be sore. Your body is simply not used to it, just keep at it and you will get used to it. Sounds like you have a pretty good idea about it now.

you should wait ... i find that by doing a 3 day split body ... if i do feel sore, by the time i go back to doing say chest again, the pain has disappeared as i have given it enough rest to recover.

Pearl gave the best advice, it depends on the level of soreness. My first time of doing squats in months I was too sore to get off the couch, if I would have went and trained like that I would easily had gotten injured and my form would have went to hell due to a limited flexibility in the stabilizer joints. It depends on the level of soreness.

Usually if you're on a program like Bull is talking about where you train chest and biceps on Monday (which is a split), you'll be recovered on Monday when you do chest and biceps again, and if you're not- You're most likely injured. Soreness tends to go away in around 3-4 days, if not, there's something more than that. Recover is depended upon protein.

even if your on splits, I dont see how waiting can be beneficial at all...unless were talking about an injury, but the topic seems just to be doms...

I got doms real bad after my deload doing squats again the first day...I was SO sore going into wednesdays workout, but I did it anyway and the next week my body was pretty much adapting to the workload and now its not a problem.

I just cant see telling someone to wait unless its injury related. *shrug*

On a split you'd be waiting anyway, so none of your workouts would really take a rain check. I know Monday I did squats and the next day fell out of bed and literally crawled into the kitchen, I couldn't imagine squatting that day, my form would have went to hell, it's just the degree of soreness, light soreness you should work through, you're never really fully recuperated when you train anyway. I get what you're saying and if it just a case of DOMS, train though it. Just adjust the volume and intensity so it won't lead to anything worse.
