So I just finished a Killians Irish Red, and I was thinking to myself, why in the hell does the ass of the beer always taste the worst? I can never figure it out because I rarely drink beer casually like I was tonight, normally I pregame with a six-pack of Lemon-Tea's (half long island iced tea, half lemonade vodka, 5% alcohol per bottle, and I can down 2 of them in less than a minute, they're good). So by the time I get to the bar, I don't really notice the taste.

Backwash is probably a part of it, but the biggest factor is temperature. Typical American lagers are only drinkable while they're very cold. When it warms up, you can taste all the off flavors from the various additives, adjuncts, clarifiers, fillers, etc. For good beer, the situation is sorta reversed. A quality ale is actually better at a warmer temperature, but most places serve all their beer very cold (or in those idiotic frozen glasses), so you can't taste it. Most people aren't used to tasting their beer, so they think it's bad when it warms up and they can taste it.

If I'm going to a party and it's BYOB I get Sam Adams, Killians, Guiness, usually I'll get a twelve of one of those, and then a six of whatever specialty imported beer the distributer has. I'm pretty sure I don't backwash either, but meh, just something I noticed is all.

Well, Guiness is good warm unless you just don't really like ales. But it's not an exceptional stout. Sam Adams is good of course, but it's still a lager, so there is a point at which it's going to get too warm. It's also a fairly hoppy lager, compared to what most people are used to. That's fine if you're a hop-head, but casual drinkers are going to find it bitter, especially when warm. Killians occupies a sort of middle ground, where it's better than most of your usual domestics, but not quite up to the standards of the more common imports and way below your better micros and craft beers. There isn't a one-size-fits-all when it comes to beer temperature. Ideal temperature depends on season, beer style and obviously personal preference. Some other possibilities for the last few swallows being nasty... It's probably pretty flat by the time you get to the end (again, the ideal level of carbonation is style-dependent with your darker and higher-gravity beers being less carbonated). This might actually be worse if you drink it out of the bottle, as you'll have a subconscious tendency to swirl the beer or gesture with the bottle. If it's a bottle conditioned beer, there will be yeast sediment at the bottom, which some will find objectionable. If that's the case though, you should get down on your knees and thank whatever god you believe in that you are fortunate enough to have such a brew in your possession and learn not to be such an ungrateful sod. I moved away from Michigan two years ago and still haven't fully processed the fact that there isn't a quality brewpub on every corner and that you can't buy Bell's at any gas station or party store.

As the temperature decreases, so does the flavor profile. That's why beers such as say molson canadian or other name brand lagers (aka, the ones that get advertised by hot chicks in tube tops) are best ice cold, because you can't taste it. For the same reason a cold shot of espresso should be poured down the drain.

Temp has been mentioned, and if youre drinking mainstream american domestics... Drink faster. Ive found that my current favorite, Anchor Steam, is best slightly above room temp at the start.
