Why do Gyms...? - Thursday, September 17, 2009 3:00 PM ( #1 )
I just moved to another town and there is only one gym here Equinox. Its membership is sky rocket high and its got the same equipments as any other gym. I cant really afford the $146/ month so therefore I gotta start up using temporary wieghts etc. Why is this gym so expensive?

JESUS CHRIST!!!  $148/month!?  That is outrageous.  The most I have ever heard of around my area is 60/month and I thought it was a joke

I've heard of places that are upwards of 150 bucks a month for a family, but they have all kinds of ridiculous crap no one would really need or use.  When I lived in that area I went to a place for 15 bucks a month that had all I needed.  One year membership would be 148x12=1776, you could build yourself one heck of a garage gym for that amount of money, if you had the money anyhow.

Considering they are the only gym in the area, they have a monopoly on the "fitness industry".

For about $500 - $700 you can get a power rack, bench, olympic bar, and plates, and you'll have just about everything you could possibly need.

Yep, and anything else you probably would want you could improvise and build on your own.  But right there is your main need.  The rack and bench I want though is 1k.

Seriously, if you can afford it, I would put together everything on my own rather than go there.  Even if you had to take out a loan it would be far better than going there.  I purchased everything I have for about $1,300.00 - that was probably 12 yrs ago.  Imagine how many workouts I have gotten over those years.  And, my equipment is in excellent shape still - it could potentially last my whole life.  I have everything I need to do 95% of the exercises I want.  The only thing I would have liked to have had all those years when I first started lifting was someone to help guide me in my workouts and nutrition.  That is where a gym might come in handy if they have a trainer you can work with.  But, there is a lot of information you can get nowadays if you just take time to research things.  I am certain I would be much further along now had I known nutrition, diet, reps, sets, exercises, etc. much better in the early years.

True but now there is the internet! I lacked a lot of important information as well back then. Plus I think trainers suck, at least the majority of them.

Yeah, the internet certainly does make a wealth of information available, and very easy to get at.  Beginners now can get all the info they need, but they still have to be careful and not accept everything they find at face value.  But, at least its out there and obtainable.  And yeah, I have heard that many personal trainers at gyms aren't that good.  I don't have any personal experience with them, never joined a gym.  I prefer to workout in my dingy, dark basement alone with some good music.
