Where to go from here? - caloric intake (My story) - Wednesday, October 07, 2009 12:28 PM ( #1 )
Last September I finally got myself back into the gym and began getting positive results for the first time. I'm 6'2" and last Sept. I started at over 20% BF (I didn't test until a few weeks into my routine). I first began with a calorie deficit and over about 6 weeks I had dropped down to 185lbs at like 14% body fat. From there I started increasing my caloric intake and I gained roughly 10 pounds or so of muscle over a period of about 4 months. My lats finally were developing and my chest starting getting a bit bigger, but started to really pack on the fat once my caloric intake got too high. Then I unfortunately, took a break for a month or so and then slowly began to try and cut back down for the summer time. I dropped weight muucch slower during the begining of the summer than I did last year. I ended up at about 195-198ish with like 13% BF or so..Took another break and just began again a few weeks ago.

I now weigh 213lbs now and I guesstimate probably 16-18% BF. I have always had larger legs and a butt which I mostly blame to genetics..I have also always had side fat. My goal is to someday be around 220-230ish at around 10-12%BF, and yes I am well aware this could possibly take years. I work in a boat yard and have a very active job (specifically for the month of April and October). With school and this busy month of work it is hard for me to prepare all my food each night and still have free time. With this in mind for the past three weeks I have been eating around 2000ish calories a day. I'm not doing it on purpose, but one would assume I should be dropping weight? I usually find myself getting around 5 hours of sleep a night and after reading a few things about this im starting to think this is to blame? My caloric intake has also been fluctuating day by day..I go to school 2 days a week and I commute quite a distance so Its hard for me to pack 3 full meals along with all my school gear. Could this be part of the issue as well?
I am unsure of what to do at this stage with my current weight/bf%. My plan is to eat the proper amount of calories that would maintain a weight of 205lbs (which i think is around 3100) until work starts to slow down and will alow me the proper rest and time for training. What do you predict will happen if I do this for a month or so? Will I slowly lose weight, but at the same time start to regain the muscle/strength I lost from where I was months ago? I see a lot of people with a high BF% who ask if they should cut before they try and bulk. This is what I did last year and it worked well for me, but I believe the reason I was able to cut so quickly is because I had a drastic switch from a unhealthy life. My body doesn't seem to respond to what these calculators say I shuold be eating for cutting/bulking. I have had to eat a lot less to drop and when I eat what they say I shuold to bulk I pack on too much fat. Do you think 3000 calories is a good number for maintaining for the next month which will eventually lead into bulking over the winter? If so, then how much should I start increasing my caloric intake to get bigger?
Thanks for any help and for those who read..I know it was long!
