It's great having people to ask for directions Smile Well anyway, I was wondering, my agility is nill so obviously I have to stretch, but my question is, when during my exercise should I do this? I read somewhere you should do it between warmup and exercising, but today when I visited a gym for the first time the instructor told me I should do it when I'm all done. Which is it?

You can do both. I warm up, then do my first set and then after my first set i begin some stretching. I usually do it between sets until my workout is over. Or you can hold off until after the workout. Use whatever method makes you most comfortable.

I love to stretch in the AM, helps me wake up.  And before I hit up the gym, about 15 minutes, but i only stretch the muscle groups that im going to heavily train.  It helps getting that blood flowing, which is good before working out, i wouldnt do it after because you need to rest not keep stretching.

Stretching before warming up will cause minor tearing within the targeted muscle. So its better to warm up first and then strech as this will reduce those muscle tears. When you lift, you are tearing the muscle which could cause the stretching tears to become greater. So basically, you are putting yourself at higher risk for injury. Stretching during/after a workout will bring greater flexability to the muscles.

Ok thanks guys. On a different sidenote, Misanthropy, how do you mean between two sets? Do you mean to say you do a bunch of exercises, then rest/stretch or whatever, and then do (virtually) the same exercises one more time?

Warm-up sets
Working set 1, Exercise 1, then stretch.
Working set 2, Exercise 1, then stretch.
Working set 3, Exercise 1, then stretch.
Working set 1, Exercise 2, then stretch.
Working set 2, Exercise 2, then stretch.
Working set 3, Exercise 2, then stretch, etc

I only spend a few moments stretching between sets instead of waiting till im done lifting to stretch.

Make sense?

Indeed it does. Seems complicated though, but if it works for you just keep it up! :D

  • Stretch after you do your regularly scheduled strength and endurance exercises.
  • If you can't do endurance or strength exercises for some reason, and stretching exercises are the only kind you are able to do, do them at least 3 times a week, for at least 20 minutes each session.
  • Do each stretching exercise 3 to 5 times at each session.
  • Slowly stretch into the desired position, as far as possible without pain, and hold the stretch for 10 to 30 seconds. Relax, then repeat, trying to stretch farther.

Do dynamic warmups before-hand to get the blood flowing. For example, do high leg kicks, lunges (bodyweight) or jump rope to get the blood flowing. Then lift. Then, afterwords, stretch the muscles in question. I try and stretch for 1 hour every morning after breakfast, but it gets time-consuming. Smile

Don't stretch the muscle you are working out between sets as you will just fatigue it and reduce the amount of weight you can lift on the next set. So, use your head as well as your body.

For me Bodybuilding is just the application of commonsense and frankly, some of the opinions I 'read' on forums are 'way out'. Smile
