When is this RETARDED FAD going to die??!!
-
Sunday, April 20, 2008 6:42 AM
Friday, I spent the entire day in the conference room with my laptop, going over powerpoint slides with two managers for a presentation due tomorrow. We knew it was going to be an all-day affair, so we ordered in lunch from Panera. I had black bean soup, a veggie sandwich, and a salad, which came with a big chunk of whole grain baguette. Seeing as I already had a whole sandwich worth, I wasn't in the mood for the baguette, so I offered it to one of the managers, who replied, "oh, no thanks. I'm doing the low-carb thing." Look. I understand the point of cutting out processed white flour and refined sugars from your diet to help lose weight. I understand the relationship between insulin response and fat storage. But what percentage of the lemmings still perpetuating the profoundly misguided and dubious Atkins "wisdom" even know what a glycemic index is? I mean really. You can't eat a whole grain baguette? That's just freaking SAD.

It's not about metabolism. It's about counting calories absent any consideration of their QUALITY. Low carb shenanigans are a recipe for failure every time, because they deprive your body of a valuable source of slow-burning energy. People think they're doing themselves a favor by skipping the carbs, when what they're really doing is setting themselves up for wild fluctuations in energy levels. Every single carb-cutting person I've EVER gone mountain biking with -regardless of their experience level- becomes the limiting factor on the ride. Why? Because you can't sustain any kind of physical exertion on an egg whites omelette, bacon, and coffee alone. So how do these people compensate? Energy drinks. It's madness.

theres a difference between low carb and no carb. i wouldn't have taken that food either. theres nothing wrong with low carb diets and most sucessful bodybuilders go through some type of carb restriction to get really lean

You're talking about a deliberate, transient dietary tactic for a short-term effect (pre-competition). What I take issue with are all the uneducated masses who think they can make this kind of diet a full-time thing. It's heard mentality, plain and simple. I'd be willing to bet my entire paycheck that 9 out of 10 low-carb dieters have done no more research than read a magazine article from the checkout isle of their local grocery and/or talked to someone else who made great short-term progress on a low-carb diet before committing to it.

I wouldn't bet against that argument.

I personally am a cycler of carbs. I like to use one fuel source per day, either good fats, or low glycemic carbs. The low carbs system can only work if you are getting enough to replenish your glycogen stores, or else you are in trouble in the long run. I am diabetic, so the carbs cycling just makes my life easier.

Because I don't count calories anymore I can't be exact, but I probably eat around a 33/33/33 ratio....works for me, not too many carbs and plenty to fuel my workouts. Unless you really know what your doing, ANY fad diet is completley worthless....and yes there are some bodybuilders who do know what they are doing so I'm not rippin' on those of you reading this

As long as it's easier to diet than eat correctly, there will always be fads and quick fix workouts and supplements. What's easier to the average person who knows very little to nothing about nutrition? 1) Avoiding everything they consider to be a carb (good or bad) 2) Calculating their calories based on their percentage of body fat, activity levels and then engaging in proper meal planning. Plus eating 5-6 times per day and drinking water. Add in exercise. #1 is easy man. Avoid all carbs. Or only learn about the carbs you need to avoid. Simple. Less work. Or as Jack Donaghy of 30 Rock said, "Not thinking is what makes America so great."

Maybe I shouldn't say it "irritates me", because -like Pimp says- I could care less if they never figure it out. It just boggles my mind how people are so eager to follow any advice without questioning it, and jump on any bandwagon to get out of doing the work. I'm convinced people would smear dog sh!t under their noses if you could convince enough of them that it shuts down your body's fat storage mechanisms. Don't think. Just follow the herd.

5 weeks ago a small group of people I know decided to join an informal, "Biggest Loser" challenge. $100 in the pot. Nothing serious. Some Facts: 1) It was 100% based on the overall percentage of body weight they lost. Not fat but sheer weight. 2) None of them could tell me their current body fat percentage, how to figure it out and none of them had plans to monitor it. 3) None of them had bothered to or even understood what I meant when I asked "So how many calories a day do you need?" 4) None of them used any software or primative methods to track their calorie intakes 5) None of them increased their water intake 6) None of them had a meal plan. 7) All of them opted to just avoid "sweets" and "bad" stuff. Notes: One of them decided that eating mostly salads would be the way to go. Another one started walking to work, 5 miles each way. Guess who won Round 1? The guy who started walking to work. He simply did the simpliest thing ever. Just burned more caloires than he was by adding in significant exercise. None of them looked any healthier or better to me and not a single one of them did anything besides just hoping that magically they would lose weight. When asked if any of them had joined or were going to the gym and hitting the weights? 100% said no. Granted it's just 5 people (men and women) but I can tell you from experience that they represent more than 65% of the overweight populations approach to weight loss.

We had a Biggest Loser thing at our work. I think like 15 people joined. The first week they were all pumped. Liquid diets, salads, and less sodas/sweets/bread. It has been a few weeks now, only one lady has sig changes. She actually goes to the gym and goes crazy on the cardio, but seems to eat well and drinks plenty of water. Everyone else looks the same. I was trying to help one girl who is always worried about her weight while eating Taco Bell or In and Out. She has been trying to lose the "baby fat." Her baby is a 4 year old child. She looked at me crazy.

Hahaha, this reminds me of when my wife and some co-workers did the VPX Zero Impact Diet Challenge last year. They submitted as a team, and as individuals. In the end, all the others looked the same, lost some weight but very little body fat. The ONLY reason she was able to get them to the gym was to have their BF pinched, since it was required for the contest to be done by a certified PT. And yet my wife won the "Top Overall Female" and $5000! But still to this day, the rest of them still look as bad as they did before the contest! None of them asked her for any nutrition tips, even though they all knew she competed. And aside from them just avoiding the "bad things", she could not get them to work out with her, let alone work out in their very well equipped gym at their work. Marc is right, most people will always opt for the easiest thing they can do. Hard work is...... well, too hard!
