What's more important? Protein or Calories? - Tuesday, March 31, 2009 5:13 AM ( #1 )
ok, i'm looking to get big. I want muscle only, or at least as little fat as possible while i bulk up. I'm currently about 180lbs and i'm eating about 265g protein per day (about 1.5g protein per lb of body weight). Now, i'm worried about eating too much because i don't want the extra protein to store as body fat, or just go to waste, but i feel that i'm not eating enough through out the day. I eat every two hours.

So, waht's more important with just putting on muscle, the number of good calories i take in, or the number of grams of protein?

it all goes hand in hand.  you need to have protein, fat, and carbs....they are your calories.  everything is important

the most important thing is working your bollox off in the gym. work hard and the appetite will follow.

I think he was asking whether to focus more on getting enough protein or getting enough calories.

Unfortunately, both are important buddy. You need excess calories to grow. Don't be afraid to put on a little fat. Unless you are genetically gifted, it is almost impossible to gain nothing but muscle.

It is about quality, not quantity and meal timing is essential.

They both are, and you should know approx how many calories your taking in, instead of just guessing and feeling like you need more.

if you figure things like that out it makes it much easier and more effiecient to try to clean bulk.

you probably dont even need that much protein, but I would say it really depends on when your taking in those grams as your body can only digest a certain amount at a given time, the rest goes to waste.

I think when bulking .... you shouldnt worry about adding on some fat. Its not a bad thing and most will do this. It will even make working out much easier as you know you can eat a lot after your workout.

If you are dedicated ... then this weight will come off in no time when you cut.

I think if you work out hard, as stated above, and eat all the right food and cut out all junk ... you wont put on that much fat anyway.
