Beginning Bodybuilding Q & A
with Marc David

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Question:

Hi Marc,

I'm a bit over weight and I want to lose the fat so that I
can gain muscle.  I have the desire to look as good as the
fitness models on Muscle magazines.  I know those
expectations might sound high but if you can help me get
started on the right foot, I know that I can take it from
there...for I truly do have the passion for this, I just
don't know how to start and or what routine to use.

Please help.

Solnora

Answer:

Let's face it ...

This type of question comes up quite often and I can feel
Solnora's pain.  Why?  The opposite was true in my
case.  Imagine this skinny kid who desperately wanted to be
bigger like the guys he looked at in the bodybuilding
magazines.  Guess what?

That kid was me!  I feel the frustration of wanting to
start, knowing I needed to do something but not knowing
where to begin.  Frankly, with all the information that's
out there it's a tad bit overwhelming at times.

But first let me give you some really good news Solnora.
You said, "... for I truly do have the passion for this..."

Ah, passion.  You see, what I had when I was 16 years old
and frustrated was an incredible urge to succeed.  I kept
reading, I kept trying all kinds of programs, I train at
odd hours, I thought about it all the time.

Obsessive?  Maybe.  But successful?  Absolutely.

What's the big secret?  Passion.  An intense desire to
success no matter what.  The drive to keep trying and
figuring this out for yourself.

Where do you start?  As I've said before, we all know the
end goals we probably want to achieve but we're pretty
uncertain of how to get there.

First, in order to know where you want to get, you've got
to know where you stand.  Find out how many calories a day
you need for a particular goal.  Without knowing that tiny
bit of information, the rest is difficult to come by.

Second, track what you eat.  Countless times my jaw has hit
the floor when somebody overweight or skinny has responded
to me with "I'm not sure how many calories I ate today.  I
just eat."

Sadly that's all too common.  It's going to be impossible
to know how to adjust your course if you aren't keeping
track of it.  Don't worry, there's several resources you
can use to do this and it will be quick, easy and take
about 15 minutes of your day.

Third, don't even think about making major lifestyle
changes all at once.  Stay away from diets, short-term
thinking and fad supplements.  In order to be successful
and a champion, you've got to think with your head.

An older gentleman of seventy-two always reminds me that if
you want to stay in this game, you've got to think with
your head.

Seems obvious but you've be amazed at the short-sightedness
of many younger people today who want it all in about 6
months or less.  The faster the better.  Payback isn't
pretty.

Finally, learn what you can about these three things:

* nutrition
* training
* supplements

Don't just take anybody's word for anything.  Go ahead and
read all you can about nutrition.  The single biggest
factor in your success will be how you eat.  You'd think
eating is common sense, it's not.

Did You Know That:

* 31% of U.S. adults are classified as obese
* 40% of U.S. adults don't exercise at all
* 60% of U.S. adults don't get the suggested amounts of
exercise

It's not exactly what I would call common.

The more you can educate yourself about eating thru a
variety of resources (newsletters like this one, websites,
books, podcasts, trainers) the more ammunition you will
have at your disposal.

All this means is ....

You will be in a position to make choices for yourself.

Solnora, the real key to starting is just doing it.  Doing
anything.  It's like writing.  Maybe a bad example for this
newsletter but with writing I could think of each word to
write and each sentence.  Then I would move to the next
sentence thinking of each word.

Or I could just start and get better and learn and get
feedback.

The key to fitness is...

Doing anything to start the motion.  Just start.  Much like
I did when I saw your question and I just started writing.
Keep going, keep reading, keep thinking about fitness.  Let
that passion drive you.  Don't be afraid to make mistakes.
Set-backs are nothing more then signals you need to adjust
the course.

Once long ago, I compared just starting out to driving to a
destination or flying to a location.  As you go along,
you'll make slight adjustments.  You might not be on target
but that's fine.  It's just a way to let you know you need
to make small adjustments in order to reach your goals.

So that's why the best thing you can do to get started
towards your goals today is just to do anything.
Something.  And make adjustments as you go along when you
learn more and more about fitness.

The passion you have will lead you to success.

to read too, style book that is written with the beginner
in mind, then look no further then the the Beginner's Guide
