I know free weights are supposed to be better because you use more muscles while doing the "same" work-out...but is there any good reason to use the "machined" weights?

Thanks for the ideas.

Sure. Variety. Also a lot of people use say smiths/machines for their last exercise in a muscle group since it will help you keep proper form when you're starting to get tired. There are times let's say on chest day that I'll do Flat and Incline free weight, but I'll do declines as my last exercise on the smith so I can continue to push heavy weight when my stabilizers start getting weak.

well from what i heard and expierenced. free weights are a more natural motion. but machines put constant strain on your muscles . so there are advantages to both.  i switch it up. on machines you dont have to change weights on a barbell you do which can be a pain so theres that too. i use both but mostly free weights. its good to do both from what i expeirenced.

Machines allow you to target a specific muscle group, so working chest, a bench machine will work mainly your pecs, but will some what leave out your supporting muscle groups.

Working with freeweight allows your supporting muscles to build up, but you may not take the primary muscle to exhaustion like you can on a machine... I think a good healthy mix of both does wonders.

There are also other machine benefits that are nice once and a while, some machines have built in weight so swapping plates is quick and seamless so you can do some rapid sets, as well as this works wonders if your with a partner that does alot less weight than you... like my wife.... Legs night with squats is horrid trying to swap all the plates... too bad my gym doesnt have a machine for those lol... pulling 200-300 pounds of weight each time gets real old real quick..

Thanks guys!

So I should try to use the "smith" weights more than I was planning.

It just got me wondering, because I could "bench" 300lbs 10x on a smith but could do it once on a free weight.
