What would happen if I did cardio every day? - Thursday, November 05, 2009 3:12 PM ( #1 )
I've been "cutting" for the past two months, and have not yet lost a single pound.

I've been doing my normal workout 5 days a week, plus cardio 3 days a week. For my cardio, I just run 2 miles after my workout, which takes me about 18 minutes or so (takes me longer because I'm stocky)...

I'm getting impatient. I'm tired of being fat. I used to be skinny and toned and looked nice, now after I started weightlifting sure, I gained a lot of muscle. But now I have tons of have. I have a stomach that I'm extremely self conscious about, and people see me as being "fat" when really I'm muscle.

Anyways....up the cardio...will that be a problem? Say, 2 miles every day?

Apparently you have not been "cutting" then if you haven't lost a pound. I myself would say no against every day of the week as I think you really need the breaks. Also why are you working out 5 days a week, thats quite a bit?

I really think you should lift 3 x a week and run 2-3 x a week and cut back on the calories 500-750 a day.

5 days a week lifting is fine, I've seen magnificent results. My schedule looks like of like this:

Monday: Quadriceps, Hamstrings, Lower Back
Tuesday: Back, Lats, Biceps
Wednesday: Abs
Thursday: Shoulders, Traps, Calves
Friday: Chest, Triceps

Each work out takes about an hour, except for abs which take about a half an hour...

Maybe if instead of doing cardio every day I just did MORE cardio? What kind of cardio worked best for you guys? Also, I have asthma....which means yes, I can do cardio, but I've tried HIIT and my asthma and HIIT didn't get along very well...

Shin splints.... running every day is a killer imo. i have done it in the past, and gotten some slight stress fractures, then again i also ran in boots for miles, and with a little extra weight added in sometimes so that didnt help any...

How much and how long have you actually been running so far? Time and distance wise? hills? stairs? Do you run in the morning when you wake up on a empty stomach? after you eat?

btw i run at least 3 miles, 3 times a week down some streets with hills. I would suggest a minimum of 2 miles at least 3 times a week ie. monday wensday friday.

whats your diet looking like at the moment?

if your diet hasn't changed so that you are in a calorific deficit, then it wouldn't be surprising that you havent lost any weight, doing 2 miles 3x a week at the pace you said isnt going to do much good for you imo.

have you tried complexes? jumping rope? running further at a higher intensity?

i dont think being "stocky" is an excuse for running slowly, unless you are 5+ stone over weight.

Post your diet and your exact routine.  Maybe we can help you if we know a little bit more about what you're doing.

18 minutes of running is not enough... if you doing moderate steady cardio you need to go longer, if you want short cardio you need to go much harder...

But post your diet and exact routine... the problem probably lies with in all three.

Cutting is all about diet. You mentioned nothing about diet so I am guessing that is what is holding you back.

Lol i just noticed your runtime was 18 minutes, i missed that, i think you should cut that down by at LEAST 2 minutes, but a goal would be around 14 minutes imo, now if you can run 2 miles in 13minutes you'll be a track star :) if you run further try to maintain like a 8minute mile pace.

Like Hardway said... 18min of cardio is very low for someone who really wants to cut.  That doesn't even meet the minimum requirement for maintaining a healthy heart (according to the AHA).  But ultimately it comes down to a calorie deficit, so like Redjeep said, your diet undoubtedly needs some work.

You would first feel very weak (seeing black when you stand up and possibly feinting). If the diet is sustained, you will eventually feel chronically sick in the stomach, followed by being very cold all the time, probable constipation and pain, and after that you may lose your hair and your nails may turn blue from oxygen starvation. Losing weight very quickly typically causes gallstones, and they're excruciatingly painful.

The diet you mention is seriously lacking in essential nutrients including fibre, antioxidants, and pretty much every mineral and vitamin known to man. 800 calories a day is starvation, basic subsistance level. Less than this and your body will begin to destroy both the fat AND the muscle tissue in your body in order to feed your brain. This is what happens to people with severe eating disorders, and the muscles involved include the heart - that's right, your fitness regime will cause heart damage if you do not feed the machine (body) correctly.

The main issue is that a starvation level of calorie intake will send your body into starvation mode itself. Every gram you eat will be kept. Your metabolism will slow down and the weight will be extremely hard to shift.

No diet will allow you to lose more than 2 pounds or 1 kilo per week unless you are merely losing fluid. The people on the diet reality shows losing more are under strict guidelines from nutritionists, are eating far more than you, and are working out 8-10 hours a day.

The best solution for weight loss is to increase fresh fruit and vegetables by replacing some of your meals with them. Ensure you are still getting daily dairy and meat (or a vegetarian alternative like lentils or soy). Instead of three big meals, change to 6 light meals and start your exercise. This boosts metabolism, you'll feel more energetic and the weight will be faster to lose.
