What is the STRONGEST muscle? - Saturday, February 21, 2004 10:25 AM ( #1 )
Hey what is the STRONGEST muscle group of the body? I think it's legs but I just want to make sure... The reason I ask is because my sister said at her school there is a "1,000 club" for people who have lifter 1,000 pounds or more, any excersise. (She's in high school). She said it doesn't matter what lift they do, just as long as they do 1,000. What excersise do you think they did? I'm thinking squats but thats a hell of a lot for squats...

Don't think there's many people in the world to lift 1000 lbs on any one lift. I think your sisters confused, the "1000 club" is probably a combined sum of the three primary lifts, I have seen that before. But to answer your question, I would have to agree with you in general the strongest muscle group is legs.

no...the only muscle group which some people can exceed that is leg press, maybe squats...but when they talk about a 1000lb club....its bench press, squats, and i think deadlift/clean.......total weight combined.....

Technically, the heart is the strongest muscle, but it wont be lifting 1000lbs. next would be the jaw muscles, to rip and chew food, but again, it wont be lifting 1000lbs. Im right on with djduhon and Boyrancher.

The tongue? Man, this thread's getting a little sick for my tastes.
Yep, I'd have to say legs too. They're used to carrying around all that weight all day long, and anyone who lifts right can tell you squats and deadlifts are generally the exercises they can lift the most weight with.

Yes, the tongue is the strongest muscle. I know it doesnt measure in pounds, but its kinda like the saying "Pound for pound" its the strongest muscle in the body.

OK OK OK... enough is enough... MDA you have got to evict the next person who references Saved by the Bell .

Did that really get posted? You should be ashamed of yourself. Your credibility is gone, it might take you a while to rebound from this.

There is no way the tongue is stronger than the heart. The heart is considered 1 muscle but the tongue is made up of 4 muscles and is not as strong.

One question. Close your mouth and clamp down as hard as you can? Can you open you mouth with your tongue while clenched? Jaw muscles are stronger than the tongue.

Plus some say the uterus is the strongest due to the contractions due to child birth. So it comes down to, Heart, jaw or uterus......

and i do agree with DJ on the Saved by the bell reference.....

both the jaw, and uterus are LARGER. the tounge is so small, thats why i say "pound for pound" or "inch by inch"

someone is going to have to find this on the net so we can all sleep tonight

Relative to size, the strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.

I like Saved by the Bell. Jesse was hott! I think I've watched all the episodes even the one where they go to Hawaii. And if it's a re-run I sometimes watch it. That and Fairly Odd Parents on Nick.

D just doesn't like it cuz it's not all Marine like and Hoo-ya and SERE stuff and helicopters. But you know deep down, he watched those episodes.

Although I dunno if I would ever quote that TV show as a reference.

What's the best chest exercise? Well Slater on Saved by the Bell always said that he got pecs by doing push-ups.

Oh crap.. I just admitted to watching.. Damn it.

Banning myself...

That's it, MDA your suspended for a day... sorry man, has to be done. At least you did't reference it as a source of pertinant information. Maybe we can suspend your bust as long as you promise not to bring it up again. I like the whole chest exercise thing, by the way what did Erkel (sp?) do to build those awesome biceps?

The strongest muscle in your body in terms of power output per unit of cross-sectional area is actually the tounge The jaw muscles are pretty damn strong too...

Yeah, legs. Generally muscle strength is a factor of cross sectional area, and I don't think there's any muscle bigger around than the quads.

In ordinary parlance, muscular "strength" usually refers to the ability to exert a force on an external object—for example, lifting a weight. By this definition, the masseter or jaw muscle is the strongest. The 1992 Guinness Book of Records records the achievement of a bite strength of 975 lbs. for two seconds. What distinguishes the masseter is not anything special about the muscle itself, but its advantage in working against a much shorter lever arm than other muscles.

The jaw is as strong as it is because of the leverage of the tendons and muscles are connected & aranged in such a way. those mucles are actualy pretty small. the strongest muscle is your ass, mybey not pound for pound but its definatly the strongest because of its size.

Yeah...but I guarntee its a three or 2 lift combination. There are so few peopel that can do anything in one lift 1000 lbs (excluding leg press which like 20 people in my school can do).

when i was in high school we had the 1000 pound club, 1100, 1200 and so on.  it was a compination of bench, squat, deadlift, and clean.  other schools had their clubs as well, but did not use deadlift, and started at like 800.
