I must be in the minority on this one. My devotion to exercise has nothing to do with being better than other people. The mentality displayed in that article is the reason why bodybuilders are often regarded as arrogant, narcissistic, *****s.

that post is poetic genius " When we' re in the gym, we' re in this indescribable euphoria zone. It' s a feeling of being on, of being completely alive and aware. If you haven' t been there, then it' s like trying to describe color to a person who' s been blind since birth. Within this haze of pleasure and pain, there' s knowledge and power, self-discipline and self-reliance. If you do it long enough, Bob, there' s even enlightenment. Sometimes, the answers to questions you didn' t even know you had are sitting there on those rubber mats, wrapped up in a neat package of iron plates and bars."

I think you missed the point. I'm fed up with being bob. I was the skinny kid in class. Always getting picked on. I know all the skinny jokes. Then I grew up and became the fat guy at work. I know all the fat jokes. I got to a point in my life in 2005 where it was difficult to get up off the floor. I decided that I had to do something about that. So I did the only thing I knew to do which was run and push ups and sit ups. I was doing good but then a hurricane hit and I stopped exercising. Then excuse after excuse. I'd start up again then 2 weeks or a month later I'd drop off again. No more excuses. They opened a 24 hour gym in town so it doesn't matter what my work schedule is I can train. It isn't as hard to get up off the floor anymore. I bounce out of bed now instead of rolling out. So sure I want to be better than bob, I want to be better than myself.

Yeah, I must have missed something: First the author is upset that Bob wasn’t checking out his ass and didn't recognize his bodybuilding physique. Then he says the main reason he works out is so that he can admire his naked self. Then he says the distain he feels towards regular people helps motivate him to work out. Maybe he is being tongue-in-cheek, but he still sounds like a jerk to me.

ORIGINAL: Solomon Grundy Yeah, I must have missed something: First the author is upset that Bob wasn’t checking out his ass and didn't recognize his bodybuilding physique. Then he says the main reason he works out is so that he can admire his naked self. Then he says the distain he feels towards regular people helps motivate him to work out. Maybe he is being tongue-in-cheek, but he still sounds like a jerk to me. First of all, boiling any story down to its individual parts can make it seem outrageous. Second, keep in mind that the "regular people" aren't separated by their looks but by a lack of willpower. Third, this story was clearly written for a very specific audience. A lot of people on this forum seem to relate well to the story, so I would say that it was able to successfully reach that audience. If you don't appreciate that story then it probably wasn't written for you. And finally, he is being a jerk but the things he is thinking have run through my mind before.
A healthy body is a guest chamber for the soul: a sick body is a prison. -Francis Bacon ORIGINAL: Yet Usually when I get to the top of my deadlift I'll do a reverse-grip curl.
