Weird pain in shoulder - Tuesday, October 18, 2005 11:08 AM
Hi, I recently started feeling pain in my shoulder after doing a few assisted pull ups. I get on the machine and pull up about 40% of my bodyweight. My left shoulder is completely fine going up but when I go back down it hurts a lot. My right shoulder is okay, even stronger than the left. The pain has been there for 1 week and I haven't excercised it for about 5 days. Then I tried doing 1 pull up and it hurt when I came down all over again. So to compensate I have to use all of my right arm to come down and when I go up I use both again. I don't know what I can do to make it better. Any help would be great!

If it hurts to do pullups, dont do pullups.

Is this shoulder pain just on pullups or is there during other exercises? What about your everday activities - how does the shoulder effect you there?

It's usually just on pullups, I sometimes feel the pain there after doing some bicep curls but when i pull up on the bar it rears its ugly head again. i've been doing pullups everyday,  but only like 20 pull ups then i'm done for that day. it was only for 3 weeks though... i've been resting for about a week with zero weight lifting done and then i do one pushup again today and bam there it goes. it's totally scary.

conditioning is needed for the connective tissue in that joint!  I would also suggest stretching the biceps and chest before pullups so the attachments are not too tight, then lat stretching and shoulder stretching after the pullups.  Blood and oxygen will then return to the area to help you achieve this more comfortably.

How does the shoulder effect your everday activities? i.e. sleeping, putting your clothes on, hanging up the washing, pushing youself up and out of a chair etc....

A shoulder injury can often be diagnosed depending on the degree and nature of how its effecting your everyday life..

Hi, it does seem like the injury is from a tendon. My everyday life doesn't cause the pain in the shoulder to come out. I can put on clothes and sleep and carry books with no pain in the shoulder. Just when I do one pull up it'll occur. I'll do some streching before I workout from now on. Can I take some magical pills that'll make the pain heal up? I want to do some pullups!

What i was trying to do there was grade the severity of the injury.

If your shoulder isnt effective your everday life, its not likely to be anything major. Most rotator cuff injuries (most common shoulder injuries) when moderate to severe, effect even the most minor of things like taking off your shirt or sleeping.

Magic pills? nope. Simple painkillers maybe - Paracetamol (acetaminophen i think its called in USA) or some NSAIDS.

Stop doing pull-ups for a while. Let your shoulder recover first. You are not going to shrink in size if you stop for a week or 2.

Gentle stretching not only before you workout but at other times as well. Massage may also help.

Avoid overhead activities or shoulder aggravating activities - throwing, pitching, climbing trees or rope in gym class etc..

Rest, rest, rest, rest and then some more rest. That and patience. You wont lose any mass if u stop for a week or 2. on the contrary, you may come back stronger.

From what i can grade at the moment - seems like a minor muscular strain.

and as always... IF pain persists, please see your doctor!

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. entertain me this one question though: If i shot up a very tiny amount of steroids at the injury location, would it make the pain go away?? plus make it stonger so i'm immune to pain? i'm a little desperate, it's been 2 weeks with no pull ups and then i just did one and the pain! it's still there and all i want is bigger lats!

rest, rest, rest, rest, rest ,rest ,rest, rest, rest and more rest.

Not onl pull-ups but working out all together!

If you havent been doing anything apart from pullups and its still hurting, then i suggest u go see ure doctor.

It u have been working out (wihtout pullups) then how can you expect your shoulder to heal if u dont rest it???

Sure everyone wants bigger something/s. Hell i wouldnt mind bigger quads but when i strained my groin, it stopped me doing legwork for 6 weeks. Just had my first workout back yesterday and you know what? my size will be back in a week or 2, my strength will be back in a week or 2 and my legs feel refreshed and i can really push hard knowing that im fully recovered and i wont aggravate an existing injury.

Injection steroids? Anabolic steroids?! NO. Corticsteroids... sure temporary pain relief maybe for a day... or two... or even a week if ure lucky. Then... it comes back.

And i hope u mean if the DOCTOR shot up corticosteroids and NOT YOURSELF...

Okay! I'll rest up, i just thought resting the shoulders alone would be ok. i mean, i did jog 20 minutes a day and did some bicep curls and everything else but now i'll just sleep in more and putter around the house. maybe read a book. i just subscribed to Iron Man! =) and forget about the steroid question, hehe, crazy question..
