Weight Gain, building mass - 1/30/2005 4:58:27 PM

Aright, i'm new so i'll just quickly go through what i have learned to be the routine.

17 years old
6'2 145 lbs.
wants to be at 165-175 lbs

My predicament: Ok, well, from reading my stats you know im a scrawny guy. I have been trying to gain weight for the past, oh, six or seven months and have made NO progress. I mean not a single pound!!! I just can't figure out what i am doing wrong.

I have tried weight gain suppliments, i usually drink one a day. I have tried changing my diet around, but with little consistency. I work out at the gym 3-4 times a week. I am doing everything i am being told to do...but...i don't know if i am doing them incorrectly, in the wrong order, or what!!??!!

Getting to the point..... My questions are:
1. What are the most effective weight gain suppliments and when is the best time to take them (before a workout or after)?
2. What are reasonable goals to set for myself for weight gain?
3. What should i need to know about my diet? ---- If you have the time, please feel free to tell me your daily diet or what you think mine should be.
4. How do people gain weight despite their overactive metabolism?
5. As far as workout routines go, what do you recommend? --- I play lacrosse so i like concentrating on my chest and arms, forearms, and shoulders.

Thanks for any and all help you are able to give me.

Right here's your problem. If you do anything with little consistency, you'll never get results.
Forget about weight gain supplements for right now- You need to eat five or six meals a day, with the right amounts of protein, carbs and fats- You can go to the nutrition forum, check out the post near the top called calculate your caloric expenditure- Basically, you'll need to figure out how many calories a day you need to gain weight, and then form a diet that contains as many calories as you need. There are no supps out there that can speed up the process, weight gain shakes are simply an easier way to get more calories into your system to help out with you daily needs- But nothing beats good solid food. A solid food meal will get you further than a weight gain shake any day.
So, when it comes to supps- Get yourself a good protein shake to start out with, nothing more. Have one or two shakes a day, with a good healthy snack- Those can count as two of your meals, make sure you have one right after your workout- They're a great way to get protein into your system quickly, which you really need right after a workout.
Reasonable goals to set for weight gain- Hard to tell, since everyone's different, and there are a ton of factors involved. If you eat what you should as often as you should, as I outlined briefly above, you should see results within a couple of months at least.
How do people gain weight despite their metabolism? Like I said earlier, you need to figure out your caloric intake needs- That is, how many calories it takes to keep your body at it's current weight. Adding five hundred calories or so to that number will do nicely. You basically need to overfeed your system so it doesn't have the chance to burn all the calories off- You definitely need to take your lacrosse and any other cardio type exercise you do into consideration- This activity will burn off calories that should be going towards building new muscle, so you'll have to eat even more to compensate for that activity.
As far as workout routines go, check out the top of the training forum for a post titled "The Basics." There's an excellent program in there, along with some other great advice on eating and stuff- And remember, it doesn't matter if you like concentrating on chest, arms, forearms and shoulders- If you want results, you're going to have to work everything. For real strength and size, no exercise out there beats squats for example- And deadlifts come in a close second. Check out the routine in that post, and let us know what you think.

Lord they are hot though, don't touch, I advise. But you are burned, and penalised, of course overdramatise and you get the prize. I am that boy baby girl and now I will end your 9 lives.

What? Aussies speak English- Unless you're like an aborgine or something.
Check out our nutrition forum, you'll find out all you need to know about eating there.

I have the same problem as you have. I am now 23 and I am sitting at about 145. I have been working out seriously for about 3 years and I can’t seem to put large amounts of weight on. I have tried many weight gainers out there but none seem to do the trick. If you are like me your metabolism is still in over drive and it will take time for it to slow. I have to work for every Lb I get but you will see results. Stick to it and in time you will gain weight and mass.

Unfortunately every day is different. I am currently in college ever day but weekends all day and working my tail off to pay for it. I have been relying on my breakfast lunch and dinner for my main meals and eating anything when I get a little time. Luckily I will be graduation this semester and will be able to start eating what I need to when I need to.

I have a friend just like you and had all of the same issues with gaining weight, strength and so on. I designed a hardgainer program for him and here it is. Workout monday, wens, sat. The reason being is with your bodytype you need to heal properly and train hard. workouts should last 45 mins, no more because you have what is called a 45 min anabolic window, any more than that certain catabolic " muscle eating chemicals" like cortisol in your body are released. When that happens you obviously are overtraining especially with your bodytype. Do compound movements like deadlifts, squats, benchpresses, dips, curls, shoulder presses. From what you said it sounds like you don't like to work lower body "VERY big mistake if you want to get big". Squats especially when done right with a good weight release natural groth hormone and make you then grow everywhere. Do 4 sets of each exercise and 6-8 reps. Eat lots of eggs, beef, lots of complexe cards. Eat your face off. Shakes our mostly for post workout. Focus most of your intake on whole foods, but don't get me wrong supplements do rock, when taken right. If you want the entire workout plan e-mail me at dclarke302@hotmail.com. Good luckSmile
