Weight loss - Saturday, January 10, 2004 11:28 PM ( #1 )
hi
I am 280 pounds, 5'10, bordering on obesity. i really want to loose this weight. my metabolism is exremly slow. i tried diets they never work. so i am going to persue the gym path. i go to the gym 2 -3 times a week, mostly cardio and abs. i am eating a bit healthier. i have seen no results and i was wondering if there is any supplements out there that will help me. i was told stuff like ripped juice might do something for me, but i wanna get some info about this stuff before i start using it. i took ephedra a couple of years ago, have a bad effect and stopped it. now its banned and some people are saying that ephidra free products are useless.

please guide me to the right path where i can hopefully find some answers and do more reaserch.

here is alink for a product i was advised to take

Lets clarify that you want to lose fat, not weight! It's a bad misconception, I think due to con sales pitches and advertising.

Go look through some of the threads in the Forum fat burning and look at some in the nutritional forum. Then! hehe Check out training and exercises and maybe you can educate yourself on composing a training routine for yourself and what exercises would benefit you most for you to reach your goals.

If you have any more questions on things you are not sure about, feel free to ask in a related thread, or make a new one if necessary.

This thread you made, SilverTurtle, will probably be moved because it is more about nutrition and exercise, rather than supplements. No worries though, just letting you know.

The best advice I can tell you is write down everything you eat for a week straight. Write down calories, fat grams, carb grams, and protein grams. Then use the links in the forums to calculate how many calories you need to maintain your weight and how many you need to cut fat. I would not recommend taking supps right now until you see what your diet looks like. I started losing a lot of fat and water when I cut out the fast food and sodas. Soda is the worst thing for you when you are trying to loose weight.

I just wanted to add onto that statement, you want to know how your body is reacting to the training in general. You can make great gains for a while, lower body fat% and look good, then plateau!! Then think about looking into what kinds of supplement may benefit you.

College student doesn't make it easy for your dietary needs! You could try and prepare meals and meal ideas for the week ahead. Stop drinking the soda, it's a must. Weight training is a serious thing and will take stubborn commitment![&o] lol

Try and eat solid food based meal mornings and nights, and for during they day, as a college student, you may find it easier to have a couple or so protein shakes with you. It's vital you are consistent with meals every 2-3 hours as to keep your metabolism high and burning like a mo fo. And I guess right now you are more interested in lowering fat percentage more than bulking... So in the morning wake up and before eating do 30-45 minutes of continuous cardio training, like jogging. Why before eating? because while you sleep metabolism drops like a 2 ton steel ball, because you wont be eating for a while! But even still you are depleted of glycogen and carbohydrates. You'll be forced into burning fat storage for energy, the cool thing is that your metabolism keeps burning fat hours after your workout and releasing endorphins... Awesome way to kick start the day! So if you manage your diet and keep consistent with you 5-6 meals a day, your metabolism will be like a turbo charged Ferrari!!!

You must compliment cardio with weight training at least 3 days a week starting off. have rest day, always alternate muscle groups and never train sore muscles (you'll reverse lean mass gains) Also have cardio day where you do cardio in the after noon too. This is standard and pretty much the basics. It seems like a lot but it's not that hard to understand and take in.

Don't make excuses... Over come your situation !!!!n You can do it! good luck.

Welcome to DB SilverTurtle!

Forget the product.. ripped fuel stuff is just going to kick start the metabolism chemically (maybe if it's a good decent product) but your eating habits will make the efficiency of that closer to none. While soda may be no calories or low calories it's still sugar.

Chazz puts it best when he's giving you advice about nutrition. Yeah.. college is harder. Totally. But not impossible. There's guys on this forum in college who just make changes and they make it. It's not easy but if you really want gains and to make changes, then you have to go the extra mile. Popping a pill, chugging a shake or taking a fat burner when other aspects of your life are not in order won't do much except make your wallet thinner.

So your #1 priority should be nutrition.

Use FitDay to track what you eat. Great site, it's free, web based and you'll see what's going on in a graphical pie chart. While taking a protein shake might be helpful if you aren't really eating too much and when you do it's whatever comes along, no supplement can really help you if the rest of the time you are defeating possible progress.

The quick answer is.. Start reading about Nutrition. Not in-depth science stuff.. just the basics. How to eat, what to eat, when to eat. Being in college you can go to the store, buy some good snack items and make good choices when you buy lunch or eat at the cafeteria. There's a lot of food in those places. Not all of it's good. But with most fast food style places and cafeterias, you can make good choices if you know what you are looking for.

So stop settling for whatever comes your way and figure out what choices you need to make in order to make healthier decisions to reach your goals.

The Nutrition forum can do that or you can read the book called Burn the Fat, Feed the muscle. It's awesome. As cheap as any college text book, only you'll end up reading it and keeping it longer then any book you buy for school.

Best of luck. The best thing you can do now is continue to read, ask questions and make a plan for your needs. We can help you with some of that stuff.

Hey SilverTurtle, first of all welcome to DBB -- lots of wise people here, so stick around and listen to 'em it'll do ya good!

Now then, back in July, I was more or less in your shoes: 6'1", 266.5 pounds 37% body fat. Since then I've found the joys of weight training (and the not quite so joyous cardio), and gained a bit of sense about my nutrition, and I've dropped over 45 pounds. A lot of the info you need to know can be found in this post and in the links it contains (man, ain't meta-posting a blast?).

As for the Ripped Juice, or other thermogenics, don't waste you money. You'll get at most a 10% metabolic boost from those products, which would work out to about 2 pounds in two and a half months, and I don't consider that worth the price.

Next, being a looooong-time college student, I understand how hard it can be to eat right. Are you on a meal plan at school, or are you on your own food-wise? Also, are you away at school, or living at home and commuting (or renting a house)? If you are at home, it should be a bit easier, as you have access to a full kitchen. If you are away, I would highly recommend you pick up an electric skillet and smuggle it into your dorm room -- you can cook an awful lot of stuff in one, like chicken breasts or salmon patties. You might even be able to make (brown) rice in one -- I've never tried it (though I could make rice in my hotpot, back in the day). At the very least, you should have easy access to the gym(s) on campus to work out. If you need help putting together a workout routine, just give a holler -- tell us what you have to work with and we'll help you out.

Just remember, it's hard work, but it can be a lot of fun. And the results are worth it. Here's what I've been able to do in six months -- and if I can do it, anyone can.

-30-

In six months, what will your t-shirt say?

My training journal: Sweating with the toadies
My scattered thoughts: The Bramble

Holy cow! Nice job. Another year from now and you'll be ripped if you keep it up. Obvious you made some progress in those pics. No doubts on this end. Loud and clear.
