I've been playing a really cool civilization-style, massively multi-player, web-based game called Ikariam. Check it out -- I'm in world Zeta. It operates at a fairly slow time-scale, so it's something where you can just pop in and set up a few things, then come back a few minutes or a few hours later (i.e. it only sucks up a few minutes of time at work so you don't end up goofing off all day).

How do you send people to get resources? By the way, I'm on Zeta also, name is Yet, town is Absolution.

Go to island view and then click on the saw mill (little stack of logs) or the luxury resource (depending on the island, it will either be a vineyard for collecting grapes/wine, volcano for collecting sulfur, quarry for collecting marble or crystal mine for collecting crystal glass). Then you can choose how many people you want working on that resource.
If you give me the coordinates of your city I can send you stuff. There's a line at the top of your city view that says the island name, the coordinates and the name of your city, like:
(world) > (island) Foobarios[44:55] > Your City Name

odw: You need to rename your town. Every town starts out named "polis". There are three Polises on your island, I can't tell which one is yours. Click on your town hall, then there's a "rename" button right above the smiley face on the right.
Yet: You need to research "expansion" at the academy, then you need to build a palace, then you can plant new colonies at empty locations. To take over the other towns, you need to research Military occupation which will take a lot longer. But you're better off trying to expand to other islands where you can get other luxury resources like marble or wine or crystals.

...This wouldnt happen to be made by designers who also made the games "The settlers?" would they?
because the art seems similar and the gameplay is basically the same, very fun game though so il sign up and give it a go

It's not by the same company - I don't know if they'd even exist any more; The Settlers is 15 years old. But it's basically the same genre/style of game.
What I really like about Ikariam is that it's completely ordinary, standard web technologies; HTML and JavaScript. There's no flash, Java, stupid plugins, weird platform-specific clients or video players or any of that crap. You can use it just like any other web page (you can use multiple tabs, forward and back buttons, bookmark cities, etc.)

Meh, we won't be able to do much when it takes a days to transport goods between our towns. It'll be faster for me to just take over a sulfur island myself.

We can't interact if you're on Alpha, but you can sign up for a new account on Zeta if you want. You can't move your existing town.
