I injured my left knee twice. On both occassions, I fell down and landed on my left knee. Now, the joints creak and I have been looking for a way to help it heal. It happened nearly 2 years ago. My left knee cannot support my body weight and running (esp sprinting) is hard for me. Any tips? Will working out my knee slowly heal it? Thanks!

My first advice would is to see an orthopedic doctor. They could help you out with professional advice and get you together with a trainer for rehab excercises. Besides that, all the advice i can offer is to stretch and keep your legs loose. Start taking a glucosamine supplement (good for the joints). If your knee can't even support your bodyweight, than conventional weight lifting will most definately not help it.

Its more of an ache when I stress it.

I can still do light jogs though... Its just that sometimes, my left leg suddenly gives a jerk and it then aches again. When one stands up straight, usually normal knees prevent the leg from bending forward (eg against the knee's limited angle) but my left leg can bend and its really weak in a sense that I 'can' actually bend my leg against the angle. I feel like my kneecap is either shattered or really broken...

The ligaments around the knee area (side and below) also hurt when I do workouts involving weights on my leg...

All I need is a little advice on workouts during injury from people who workout...
most doctors or orthopaedicians (however its spelled) do not know workouts which can help recover injuries...One main reason is that they do not do workouts like we do...
Just asking anyone who has had any experience in injuries...

when i was younger and still playing football (i am now in college and no longer play) i messed up my back, royally. I could not even bend down to tie my shoes, and getting out of a chair and sitting down in was torture. It even hurt when i was sitting still or lying down, no matter what i did. I went to see a doctor, who x-rayed it and found nothing wrong, so i went to another, an orthopedic. He located the problem easily. I had three fractures on my lower lumbars in my back, the L-4 and L-5. The muscles in my back were spastic, or in constant uneven contraction because of the breaks in my back. The doctor set me up with a physical therapist, who i went to see often over the course of a month. With him i did several light "workouts" to loosen my back, and i also did electrode therapy and ice. This along with muscle relaxers and pain killers did away with the pain and i have had no problems with my back since, i don't even use any kinds of pads or braces when i do workouts. The kicker is...
The doctor told me if i had not come to see him, i faced one option- i would never be able to have played football again, or probably workout for that matter. He said not seeking help would have resulted in an end to my athletic life and eventual back surgery because the fractures would have only gotten worse. I can't imagine what that would have been like. Your knee is nothing to overlook, like your back. From what you are telling me, it may be an mcl or cartilage tear, but once again i am not a doctor. If you want my honest opinion on weight training, don't do anything that involves using your left knee, or knees for that matter because the extra pressure on your right knee will make it prone to injury. And i know that is not what you want to hear, but from what you are telling me there is no weight room advice i can offer being a weightlifter that will make your knee better. Weight training does not strengthen or repair ligaments, tendons, bone, or cartilage. They are completely different entities from muscle and require copious amounts of time and often surgery to repair and heal. THERE ARE NO MUSCLES IN YOUR KNEE. In other words, you can't find the answer you are looking for here, you need a doctor and or a physical therapist. You probably need lots of time off your knee (no jogging or anything) or maybe even surgery. And yes, orthopedics do know what to do, and more specifically, physical therapists know what to do for your knee, it is their damn job to know what to do for your knee. If time to go see a doctor is an excuse, it is a poor one. Screwing up your knee now ruins it for the rest of your life. If money is an issue, i don't know what to tell you. Perhaps see if your insurance if you have it will cover part of it or workers comp. Stop being stubborn man, i'm not trying to be a dick, but wake up! you could ruin your knee for life if you haven't all ready. And, once again, working out in the sense you are speaking will not help your knee. period.

That was exactly the answer I was looking for...

The last part...
There are orthopedics here...What we lack, is the therapist. The most the orthopedics can do is to take an xray, and give me some medication. There are no therapists.... That is really sad....

So what I'm trying to do is to save a couple of hundred bucks getting the medication and try to look for alternatives instead...

I will give the orthopedic a try and see what he recommends. There is a kind of supplement which can help lubricate the joints. Forgotten the name though...any idea what it is?

yes, glucosamine. After you visit a doctor and he looks at it, ask him about weight training and running, etc. I would not do anything physical until i visited the doctor. Hopefully it is just a minor problem, i wish you luck. After you have visisted the doc post again and we will see what we can do.

Checked with the docs...

My anterior ligament is gone. Will have to do a reconstructive surgery at the end of the year... max 6 mths for recovery...

ouch...

edwhobbs, there is evidence that weight-training does strengthen bones and also increases the threshold for shearing forces that tendons and ligaments can bear.

Mindfreak,

I feel you. I tore my ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in my right knee twice. First time was partial tear and treated with rehab. Second time was complete tear and treated surgically. After the operation, the graft they used for the surgery got infected and i needed 2 more surgeries and now im left without an ACL at all.

However, saying this, im still functioning fine in my day to day life and still training legs at the gym - probably harder now than ever before. Im having no difficulties at the moment.

Unfortunately for you, you need a reconstruction after which the therapist will outline a rehab program for you. Until then, lay off the leg weights, running, sports etc.

Id be more than happy to answer any questions you have about this. You can PM me if you want.
