VIDEO -- Critique the FOX Deadlifting

Well, it's time I MAN-UP and post a video of me deadlifting. I'd like for everyone with constructive criticism to tell me how my form looks. What can i do better? What am i doing right so far? I can take the heat, just be nice about it please http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o81/basicidiottt/?action=view¤t=P1010017.flv This was 265lbs on a 3x5 routine with ramped weight. And this was the 2nd set that I video'd *not too happy about how matt rotated the camera haha.. but no worries, I'm a tall guy. We'll get a better video next time. Also.. the lighting kinda sucks due to us facing the window HEAD-ON. Just rotate your head to watch the video. I appologize for the inconvenience.. but it isn't a very long vid*

I understand that you're trying to lockout but there's no real reason to hyperextend your back. Otherwise I think your form looks pretty good.

It looks as if you might be lifting up your hips/rear a little too much before allowing your upper body to follow the move.. shoulders are staying stationary and not moving with the lift... it also looks as if you're pulling back a little much with the shoulders at the top than needed..causing a little too much of an upright arch in the lower back.. could cause some issues when you get into heavier weight.. but the only dead I could really see was the first one due to your camera man.. LOL.. Here's a video of rippetoe explaining a deadlift... very good video.. gooduck.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqxim0YXr90

thanks everyone for the advice so far. once again.. very sorry for the turned camera. i will take another video at a later time, and it will be better... I promise. Agreed, i do hyperextend a bit too much. I'll try not to do that from now on. and thanks smoundz for your advice. I found it funny though when you said "when I get into heavier weight".... b/c 265 on the deadlift is already really heavy for me haha. 'preciate it.

the hyperextend has been addressed. and like smound said, at least on the first one, your hips came up before your torso did. however, i don't you were doing that as much on your other ones of course it was harder to tell. just be conscious of that. your starting position looked great and your back was straight as can be. Nice Work. now wheres that squatt?
No the leg press is not the same as doing squats.

thanks mobster'. the squat video is on the way. we have to take it on sunday though. that's the least crowded day, so that's the reason for the delay. you'll get a squat video soon, i promise. * so let me get my priorities straight here. you want your hips/butt to move upwards BEFORE the torso on a deadlift? For some reason I was under the impression that instead of 2 motions (hips move, then torso moves).. that you want it to be more of 1 solid motion. meaning.. the hips AND torso should raise at the same time as much as possible. again.. i could be wrong, but let me know guys. i'm NEW to deadlifting. What you saw there was only 6 months of HARD work. I had NEVER done a deadlift before until January of this year.

You WANT to have 1 solid motion. on your first rep you had 2 motions. and like i said it looked to be better your other rips but it was hard to tell. Your thinking is correct. after rewatching it seemed you had more a 2 motion on all except the last rep. maybe focus more on that asspect and keep your abs real tight.

ok. will do. I'll try to focus more on getting the deadlift into 1 solid movement. seems the more weight i add, the harder it is to do that haha.

But looking at your other numbers I think you'll be breezing up into the high 300's in no time..

I'm a horrible camera man. I'll do better next time Jason I promise! Was just trying to get the whole lift in the video since you've got some height on you. Didn't think about the ramifications of turning it sideways. Heh. Well I agree with what everyone else said, I've always thought you had kind of 2 motions in your deadlift but I never knew if it was right or wrong (obviously I'm more of a noob than you). The hyperextension is easy enough to fix, will probably make the lifts even easier for you actually. Anyway, like everyone said, good work, your dead's have gone up like crazy and I think they'll continue to, which is sad for my attempts to catch up. Heh.
Age: 26 Height: 5'10 Weight as of 8/31/08: 160lbs. Current weight: 180lbs. Semi-Clean Bulkin! Current Maxes as of 6/4/08: Squat: 250lbs. Deadlift: 255lbs. Bench: 285lbs.
