Unused Protien - Sunday, August 09, 2009 7:46 AM ( #1 )
My meals usually consist of 2 Scrambled Eggs, Beans and Cheese, its got a fair bit of priotien, fairly low in fat and quite easy to make.

I will pretty much eat that 24/7 when I can, thing is, I eat this when I'm not training.

Now, I'm getting told by some people, that unused Protien will turn into Fat, is this true?

all excess calories can be converted to fat, or eliminated undigested.

Latter half is surprising but does occur.

Unused protein will turn into fat. If the energy source calories lack (fats, carbs) then it can be converted to glucose. If there is excess in carbs and protein, then protein can interrupt the use of carbohydrates and can have damaging affects on the liver.

You need 1.5-2g of protein for every kg of bodyweight (bodyweight in lbs / 2.2 = kg X's 1.5-2 = protein requirements).

This is saying if the protein exceeds your calorific amount, or when you are exceeding what you should be having in huge amounts. If you aren't exceeding that amount but are infact having a large amount in one sitting, then it will be discarded from your body rather than turned to fat. Your body flushes it out in the form of ketones but they are hard to get rid of. As long as you don't go crazy on the protein, then your body will sufficiently be able to flush out any excess. By sticking to the the 1g per lbs of bw rule and have a decent amount (no more than 50-60g) in one sitting then you won't be storing any as fat, even if you go slightly over that amount.

You kind of raised a question about eating it when you aren't training aswell. If by that you mean on your rest days, then it's still fine to consume the same amount, infact you want to. If you mean over a period of a week/s when you aren't training that occur often, then seeing as a lot of the protein won't be used for the repair you would normally be doing then that amount would likely result in some being made into fat.

The reason I bluntly said 'no' in my first post is because the amount of protein you'll get from 2 scrambled eggs, beans and cheese isn't excessive by any standard.
