Unrefined Sugar - Sunday, February 22, 2009 7:33 PM ( #1 )
I was in the grocery store today and I saw these dark brown (not quite) cubes of refined sugar.  Would these be alright to use instead of table sugar or artificial sweeteners, or is it all essentially the same thing?  And what about molasses?  Is that alright to eat?  I don't know anything about it, but it just seems like a thick syrup, so I would guess no.

Honey or Stevia would be the natural sweetening choices.

stevia is sourced from plants, has no effect on insulin, I think calorie free too. Also it's 30times sweeter than table sugar. Splenda is made artificially, to the best of my knowledge!

No.

J/W, what do you even need sugar for?

I can't think of anything in my diet that needs it.

Well, I've been wanting to experiment with making stuff with oatmeal (cupcakes, pancakes, etc...) and all of the recipes I've found need some kind of sweetener, so I was just curious.

Just got back from the store a few minutes ago and noticed that they now have "Stevia in the Raw" from the same company that markets Sugar in the Raw. It was around 3 or 4 bucks a box.

I tried one of the Stevia products and it was not too bad. Not as sweet as Splenda, similar in sweetness to sugar in my opinion.

I like Stevia but haven't been able to find a place that actually offers it at an affordable price.. seeing as I hardly use sweetner, it's just not worth paying the expensive price for something I hardly use... So, i just use honey as a sweetner.....

What kind of honey do you use.  I have heard that you should use a special honey (unrefined, cold filtered or something like that) and regular stuff is just like syrup.

yeah unprocessed, unfiltered, unpasteurized honey is the way to go.  You can't miss it because it has beeswax in it and you can't see through it.

Plants make what you get in table sugar.

So to say "stevia is best because it comes from plants" is retarded.

Because table sugar comes from plants also.

And even if it is made artificially, its the same thing, you cant artificially make something and say its sucrose if its not sucrose, sucrose is sucrose, plant or machine, its the same two rings of glucose and fructose stuck together.

Sweeteners suck ass, and just because they come from plants doesnt mean theyre healthy, sucrose comes from plants and everyone bangs on and on about the health implications of it.

Plants=healthy is the biggest bull**** you can ever think or say.

Plants=Unhealthy is also the biggest bull**** you can ever think or say.

To have an opinion of something merely from its source origination is completely stupid, brocoli is very nice to eat, poison ivy isnt, they are however, both plants.

Dont be tempted to think that because its a plant and natural that it in some way must be better.

sometimes it is, sometimes it isnt, but to base the is and isnt solely on whether its a plant gets you the reward of retard.

Use honey, honey in oats is loads better than sucrose anyway, and when i say better i mean taste, and health, honey really is a godsend in that its so gorgeous and at the same time very healthy-very few foods fit both of them parts.

Aha, I feel that was somewhat aimed at me. I stand corrected, feel kinda stupid for not thinking about it a little more objectively, I was looking at it the bigger picture, how things are marketed, basing my opinions on that, you know like white bread is bad, brown bread is good etc. I feel like I've been sucked in by the media! Ha ha. Thanks for clearing that up Twisted.

How does honey fit into a cutting diet? If at all. I still got a pot of greek stuff I brought back last year.

admittedly i was aiming it at everyone, everyone was pretty much saying the same things or agreeing with what was said, oh also dont take the word "retard" with too much offence, its just a nice quick and easy word i use to mean "think faster", i know youre not actually retarded, otherwise you wouldnt be able to type lol.

Its just many people seem to think that if its plant or natural it cant be bad.

Honey fits into cutting diets on half-cheating meals hahahaha

When I read 'retard' I was looking up your address, baseball bat at hand..You know the rest! Ha ha joking. Yeah I never really thought it out properly, the whole stevia thing that is. We learn something new everyday.

So how does a chimichanga fit into a cutting diet? I haven't eaten junk in months, did I go too far today?Definitely cheat day of the month!

Stevia, which I use all the time, I even grow it, comes in leaf, ground leaf, and powders.  Use the appropriate version for your recipe.  For beverages, the pwoder works well, if you use tea or mate as a warm beverage from leaves, the leaf stevia works great.  IF YOU USE TOO MUCH IT DOES TASTE SOMEWHAT METALLIC.

honey? but u cant use them to make ur cakes i guess.
but there is a Old Frech saying that goes something like "there is no Ingredient that u can not use in a dish" . so basically u shud be able to use something or the other in different quantities  to make the cakes or whatever taste edible.
and considering the fact that u ll workout like an animal, u shud be too hungry to even notice the taste ;)
