Too many pills at once? - Tuesday, June 19, 2007 1:17 PM ( #1 )
Hey dan,

i have begun using supplements in pill form as opposed to powders and I am currently taking 19 pills a day.  Is this harmful to my body and/or what is the maximum number of pills one should take a day.  I take 2 Basic Cuts, 6 N.O. Limits, and 1 Animal Pak which consists of 11 pills.  I also drink atleast a gallon of water a day, if that helps.  Thanks in advance.

Technically there is no inherent danger in a "pill".

However, the contents in pills can pose varying degrees of challenge for the body and you should have researched the effects of all the ingredients in all the supplements you are taking on a medical site, not a commercial site.

The other issue has to do with osmality in the gut.  Simply put, if you took 10 tablespoons of a powder all at once, the gut would not be able to deal with it and it could go right through unabsorbed.  This has been observed in research numerous times with numerous quick absorbing supplements.

That means you need to spread out the consumption of supplements and take them at appropriate times, etc.
Fat soluble with fats
Water soluble with water
Pre workout and post workout at their appropriate times
Pre bed at the proper time.

Focus on the ingredients in the pill!

Some don't matter, some do.
Some things are impeded when taken with other things and some are helped when taken with others.

So what you do is find out the characteristics of what you are taking.

For instance I use B-vitamins, Vit-C...these are water soluble.
While Vitamin E is fat soluble.

Single amino acids are usually better when taken alone for specific effects.

Lastly, Doseage and Duration....
These can have a significant effect.
Some things taken alone may be more effective in SMALER doses (glutamine) while others may be more effective in larger doses (BCAAs).
Some things rely on a certain duration (creatine, Beta-alanine) before the training effect is seen.
Some things "loose effectiveness" after a certain duration (caffeine.)

It pays to educate yourself about nutrient and meal timing and about the efficacy and timing of specific supplements you might be concidering.  Not from adds or commercial sites, but from educational and scientific based sites.
