Thinking of buying ZMA, got a few questions first
-
Thursday, March 02, 2006 5:19 PM
So I'm thinking of buying ZMA, people are saying good stuff about it. However I take an antioxidant supplement containing among other ingredients 15mg of zinc, which is already the maximum RDI level. Too much zinc isn't good of course, and most ZMA products I've checked out contain 30mg of zinc (200% RDI). What should I do, would it be safe to use both, or should I buy an antioxidant without zinc?

Daily zinc shold not exceed 100mg. Extra is ok as long as it is less than 100 total from diet adn sups.

Are you entirely sure about that? I just don't wanna get copper or iron deficiencies you know.

The recommended minimum and maximum for optimal nutrition for athletes is given as 15mg and 40mg. Yes the limit for Zinc is 100 mg. (where it becomes dangerous!) Again as I point out..that is from ALL sources...after that it can depress the immune system. IT is in eggs, beans, nuts, meats etc... On a 3000 calorie diet with 20 mg coming from my multi I get 47mg of zinc ... just for reference. You should have a 1 to 10 balance between copper and zinc in your diet. I have 4.3 mg of copper in my diet..not quite 1-10 but close. Probably some of the zinc I take in is tied up... Fiber and iron as well as phytates in many whole grains (wheat) all bind or immobilize zinc. Hope that helps...

Let me ammend that...the LOAEL (An intake that is not safe for all consumers, therefore should generally be considered sub-optimal.) for zinc is 60mg. 100 mg is where it is observed that it interferes with immune function. Here, learn all about this for all nutrients from a quick article: http://www.apexfitness.net/html/nutrition/articles/case_for_supps/

Yep that helps, thanks. And damn! You're advanced, keeping track of copper intake! Ambitiouzzz... Well, ZMA it is; I'm gonna buy Twinlab's, is it any good? I don't have too much faith in Twinlab's products you see.

You might do a search for ZMA and read what some others have written about it. I never use it, as you can see this would put me at the upper end of the tolerable limit.
