The right mentality - Thursday, February 09, 2006 8:00 AM ( #1 )
Well first off, hi. I'm Angela. To get a jist. I'm 21, I have full time school plus two jobs. I squeeze in exercising when I can, and I've always wanted to get a very strong body (I don't like feeling weak/defenseless etc) The highest I've ever weighed was 203lbs. I currently weigh 245lbs (which I've lost about 8lbs in the past month and a half because I started at 153) (I have a great pulse rate of about 60bpm) and I'm 5'4/5'5 somewhere in there. I started a jogging course to make sure I'd get at least 2 days a week exercise but for awhile I was going 6-7 days a week doing an 30 mins to an hour of cardio a session, then weights ontop of it. And I can usually keep these "spurts" up for a month, but usually after a month I quit caring as much and am just not as enthusiastic about it as I was when I first started. I've been keeping up the good eating habits.. But what can I do to keep me going to the gym every day? I love working out, but somedays I just don't care. I'm naturally stronger then average..and for once in my life want to do something great for my body. What advice would you give to somone that wants to get her mentality straight and start building amazing muscle in her body?

Hi

I find it's easier to keep interested if you have a training partner that way you both try to keep each other on track. I don't have one but I find that keeping a diary of what training I do each day and how my shape changes helps to keep me motivated.

cheers

Hey Angela!

Sorry for the slow responses -apparently we're too busy arguing over whose bench press numbers are B.S. or not, LOL... Things have been kinda quiet over here on the Fem BB board, and sometimes new posts slip through the cracks

First of all, welcome to DiscussBodybuilding!  it sounds like you've made some kick-butt progress...

The highest I've ever weighed was 203lbs. I currently weigh 245lbs (which I've lost about 8lbs in the past month and a half because I started at 153)

...that is, assuming the 245 was a typo

In any case, you're dealing with a pretty common problem, as far as motivation is concerned.  It's common to have seemingly bi-polar swings in motivation when you're doing so many other things in your life.  Nothing wrong with that -in fact, hitting the gym every single day is probably not such a good idea anyway.  It's nothing to beat yourself up about, certainly.  The way I see it, if my mind isn't in it, I'm not going to be operating at 100% in the gym.  Marina has a good point about finding a training partner with similar goals to help keep you motivated.  Joining a group like this and posting regularly is also an excellent way to stay fresh and eager.

On the other hand, I find I don't have so much of a problem motivating myself to keep chugging along, because I don't have much of a life outside of my bodybuilding interests these days, ha ha ha!  If I ever find my motivation waning, I find a mirror, look myself square in the face and ask, "The eff is wrong with you?  Quit now?  After you've made this much progress, are you smoking CRACK?  Yeah, I bet all the haters out there would LOVE to see you fail.  That's right, EFF them!  Now get your skinny a** in that gym and act your age!"

Okay, maybe that's not everyone's cup of tea, LOL... But my point is that every once in a while, you have to remind yourself why you are doing this, and the first and most significant reason that springs to mind should be, "I'm doing this for ME!"

Hey there

This may sound stupid but what I do is put a picture of myself that I hate on the fridge which stops me from over eating and snacking.

If I cant be bothered to go to the gym and feel a lack of motivation there is a picture in my purse of the body I want and I just have a look at that and it reminds me of what I am trying to do.

I dont know why and it sounds crazy but it works for me.

Good luck xx

you need to change up your training every 4 weeks with slight changes either with exercises, style of training (circuits, supersets etc), reps, sets....this will keep you and your body from plateauing nad getting bored.  Also keeps the results up.
What you also need to do is set a goal, maybe a marathon, Figure competition, pair of pants you want to get back into......this always help you stick to a goal even when you do not feel like it!

damn... I wrote a paragraph and when I added the image it deleted it all! UGH! Anyway. I went on vacation for 2 weeks (needless to say I gained 5lbs, didn't exercise and on the cruise they had NO healthy options)!! I was doing awesome down to 144. I freaked out in December when I was up to 153 (I hadn't been over 150 in 4 years) So I'm swaying between 147-150 now AGAIN. Which sucks after all my hard work. Back to lean cuisines and running daily. I need to get a walkman, I think that'd help a lot. Perhaps after work today I'll do it. I wore a bikini on the cruise, but didn't feel like a knockout in it. I really wanna get down to about 125 so I can pursue modeling (I think I have a great face and smile for modeling, they jsut don't want a size 10 model anywhere for what I want to do, ha. Anyway, anyone wanna give me a great starting routine that I promise to stick to?
