The best thing that you could possibly ever get! - Tuesday, April 15, 2008 2:37 AM ( #1 )
Isn't all you need is a power rack, like this one:

Would this be a good thing to buy?
You can do bench,squats,shrugs,deadlifts,pullups,almost anything.
My mom lets me get one big thing a year for getting all A's. When I was younger I'd get videogames, but now I think playing videogames is gay, mostly because you don't get anything out of it. Anyways I was seriously considering getting this and a set of weights. Worth it?

Yep! In fact, I'm thinking of trading my Smith machine for one. I'd only add one thing to it: a high/low pulley with either a selectable stack or a plate-loading shuttle (for lat pulldowns and seated cable rows).

But I agree -since I always train solo, this is the ONLY self-spotting option besides a Smith.

I thinking about getting it because I hate working out in the gym. I go to my college's gym(I'm in an early college high school), and there's always a bunch of dumbass 9th graders who don't know what the hell they're doing, and I don't like working out there. Anyways, the power rack is cool because it's safe as a smith machine but it doesn't have a limited range of motion. The pulley thing is a good idea. Again the fact that you could a cable makes it even better. I don't understand why people would buy a smith machine when they could get this.

Boo Yaahhh, Beast! You've inspired me! You're dead on balls right about the ROM. I've done great things on my Smith, but I think it's time I quit farting around and go completely free-weight.

Here's plate-loaded and selectorized cable systems to add to a power rack...

...and something a tad more compact -not as foolproof as a full power rack, but still safer than a plain bench station...

LOL...

A rack is pretty darn nice.  As you say, you can do a lot in there and be reasonably assured of some safety.  A good option.  Just ensure it's sturdy so that you have 400+ lbs in there, it's not going to collapse.

Yeah, I'm seriously considering getting this. I still have a month of school left, so it will be a while until I get it. There isn't one at my gym and I hadn't ever heard of it. When I did see it though I wondered why anyone would buy something else to use at home.

I like going to the gym and having other people around. Why dont you join another gym where you live. If I were you I would save all that money for supps and a gym membership. *That is pretty nice though. I have just found after buying stuff to use at home I missed getting out of my house and also having a full gym with every possible piece of equipment you might want.

Yeah, Marc.  That's a real problem with me.

Just kidding, LOL...  Actually, I have no reason to load a barbell with 400 pounds in there because people are always telling me not to do my bicep curls in the squat rack anyway.

I like going to the gym too, but there's too many dumbasses that go to mine. I found that I can focus and do a lot more if I workout at home.

Get it. I'm going to build my own. It's the most important and all around useful piece of equipment you can get IMO.

Definitely get it.  I was using a smith machine, but wanted to get the full ROM, so I purchased the cage.  Now I need to get rid of the smith because it is just taking up space.  Great piece of equipment.

I love my cage. Do you already have a bench, or do you think you can get the rack and the bench from your parents at the same time? Do you already have an Olympic set?

How are you going to build one?  I tried to make one a while ago by welding some metal together and it collasped with 225 pounds.

Though, I was semi-new to welding when I did it.

I already have a bench, and I only have 180lbs of weights. I'm planning on getting a 300 pound olympic weight set also.

Haha. Check the other thread. I'll eventually build a full rack with 4x4 and pipe rails/pins. The one I've got now though is hella nice.

ok, I definitely need one of these.  Currently doing all dumbbell excercises (including bench press, squats & deadlifts), would like to add barbell.

btw, if anybody wanted i could probalby do an analysis on a cage to make sure it could support x amount of weight or x amout of load.  all i would need would be its diminsions and material.  of course the thing would have to be appropriately welded and assembled.

Hell ya man.  That's a power rack for ya!  I want one, I'm jealous.
