The FOX says you don't know Squat! -- VIDEO

Actually.. i'm the one who doesn't know squat, but while you have the thread open, please feel free to rip apart my squat form video. http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o81/basicidiottt/?action=view¤t=193.flv Nothin special about the weight here. 170 lbs for 5 reps. And I can already see that my first rep was NOT very good. I look unstable or not balanced on that first one. Enjoy

looked pretty good man, but watch the knees crossing over your toes, the hip drive isnt bad and you are definitely getting deep enough, good job!

Yep.. I agree, not too shabby.. if you push your rear out a tad bit more, you'll be golden.. should correct the knee's over the toe's issue.. but with that said.. it looks really good.. Edit: Actually, if it never got any better than that, you're still golden...

Id say your torso is a bit too vertical and it is making your knees stick too far out. It is also a high bar squat. Nothing wrong with that, just thought I'd let you know. You would be better off doing a low bar squat if you are able. Also, it is hard to tell from that angle, but make sure your knees go outward far enough so that they are in line with your toes.

thx guys. ok.. so things i need to work on. 1.) butt out further just a bit 2.) knees a bit too far forward 3.) maybe put the bar further back on the traps/back? (i like the way it feels on my traps higher up for some reason) that's 6 months of squatting so far. not too shabby. and i EVEN had to re-learn them 3 months ago b/c my form was crap for the first 3. (yes... i'm patting myself on the back for now). ok.. back to the hard work *one more thing, what angle should the camera-man be at on squat videos??? we weren't sure.

Looked pretty good to me Fox. Like others have said your knees look a little too far foward, but other than that I think you doing great.

ORIGINAL: grantoiz high bar squat? Yep. It is ideal to have the bar in the low bar position for different reasons. People who are unable to hold it that low due to injuries/flexibility etc can rest it higher, but only if that is their only option. It is talked about in Starting Strength. Compare Fox's bar postion to Rippetoe's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwXy8Dlgvzo There's a pretty big difference. Fox, try getting the bar into a lower position. Use the thumbless grip and don't let your wrists break, so that the bar is COMPLETELY being supported by your back, and no weight is on your arms. Notice how in the video Rippetoe is barely using his hands, only to keep the bar balanced? It will feel awkward at first, and your flexibility might not allow for it in the beginning, but you'll get the hang of it. And yeah, all this is nit-picky stuff. All in all it was a good squat, but how much can you improve from me just saying "good squat"?

I will add on to the hand thing. You remember that dangerous thumbless grip you use for bench? have at it here. The top of your hands should continue a straight line with your arm. (I still need to work on this too, but I just got done reading the squat chapter in starting strength for like the 4th time again) As far as everything else, you can try to work on setting the bar lower but I wouldnt worry too much about it. You and your buddy MDC should split the cost and buy starting strength. Best thing I have done so far besides join this site :P

I do them just like you do.. I also don't use very much weight.. Not that it really matters. Anyway, Hey try incorperating dumbell lunges into your routine it should help you with your stability with the squats. Switch it up, one week do the lunges the next do the squats. I have been trying it now for the past couple weeks and it's helped me out alot. Looking good buddy. GL GJ
